ABOUT Dawgs247.com

So what is this site?

That's a question we tend to get a lot. While Dawgs247.com has been around since late August 2010, many new readers are only now discovering us for the first time.

For those who have found us or returning for another visit, please allow us to explain what we’re all about.

We are not a blog. We are not a fan site. We are the next step in online team-specific websites, a place to get all your news on UGA football, football recruiting, basketball, basketball recruiting and other sports.

We combine daily beat coverage from Athens of UGA athletics – that means the same breaking news, columns, accuracy, accountability, professionalism and journalistic quality you’d expect from a credible newspaper but have seldom received from websites – with the detailed recruiting information and updates you’ll see online but not in newspapers.

And we'll do it the right way.

In a worsening media climate where reporters too often are biased with a rooting interest, unconfirmed rumors are reported as fact and the public's trust is weakening as a result, our primary goal at Dawgs247 will be to always maintain a strict standard of credibility in the information we provide.

Dawgs247 was one of the first sites introduced onto the 247Sports.com network, an undertaking launched by Shannon Terry, Bobby Burton and many of the other pioneers who originally founded Rivals.com. Many of the other sites 247 added existed previously in some form and had a strong membership before joining the network.

Meanwhile, Dawgs247 was launched brand new. We are adding subscribers at a faster rate than anticipated and we’re moving quickly to where we want to be as a site, but our youth continues to represent a blank slate to make this a home more along the lines of what you want in a site for UGA fans.

We can safely say the best is yet to come for us.

So please try us out, see what you think and help us spread the word.

Gentry Estes
Senior Writer, Dawgs247

Few reporters in the SEC are as well-traveled an authority as Dawgs247’s UGA team writer. Based in Athens, Estes is now into his second decade of covering college football on the sport's big stages. After graduating from UGA’s Grady College of Journalism in 2002 as a former Editor-in-Chief of The Red & Black, Estes worked at the Albany (Ga.) Herald, Decatur (Ala.) Daily, Chattanooga (Tenn.) Times Free Press and Mobile (Ala.) Press-Register before coming on board in Sept. 2010 to help launch 247Sports' site at his alma mater. Estes served as the Times Free Press’ lead University of Tennessee beat writer in Knoxville from 2006-07. By the summer of 2010, Estes had reached the status of lead University of Alabama football beat writer for all Newhouse newspapers in the state -- The Birmingham News, Huntsville Times and Press-Register -- under the guise of the AL.com website, making him the most-read daily writer covering the Crimson Tide. During his career, Estes has earned three national top 10 distinctions from the Associated Press Sports Editors, including a first-place showing for project reporting in 2009 on a ground-breaking series examining the cost of football recruiting at SEC institutions.

Rusty Mansell
Recruiting Analyst, Dawgs247
National Analyst, 247Sports

There are only a handful of analysts who have been hand-selected to be a part of 247Sports’ national recruiting team, but one of them calls Dawgs247 his home. Mansell has been a media member covering recruiting for more than five years, and few in the business share his background and knowledge in evaluating football talent. He was named Scout.com’s recruiting analyst for Georgia in 2008, and was promoted to Southeastern Analyst in 2009. After years of owning and operating MVP Camps in states like Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Alabama, Mansell was also on the staff at camps run by Scout.com and Under Armour. Mansell’s work has been seen in SportsIllustrated.com, The Sporting News, the Atlanta Journal Constitution and on ESPN Radio. Mansell joined 247Sports in 2010.
