BCS Watch: Just win, baby

The checklist for the things Georgia needs to happen in order to reach its first-ever BCS championship game looks significantly shorter now than it did heading into Saturday night.

Losses by Kansas State (to Baylor) and Oregon (to Stanford) meant what most thought they did at the time. Sunday's release of the updated BCS standings (VIEW THEM IN FULL HERE) just confirmed it.

If you're Georgia, it's now down to this ...
-- Beat Georgia Tech
-- Win the SEC championship game (presumably against Alabama)

And that's it ...

Georgia is now No. 3 in the updated BCS standings and in control of its own destiny when it comes to reaching Miami and playing for the national championship.

Crunching the numbers, a few things do stand out.

Primarily, the computers LOVE Florida, which has inched closer to Georgia at No. 3 than the Bulldogs are to No. 2 Alabama. The Gators are second in the computer polls, and that will only be helped if they can beat Florida State this weekend. The Bulldogs are only sixth in the six computer rankings (no higher than fourth in any and no worse than seventh). But the projected boost from an SEC title game victory (especially if it is against Alabama, which only needs to beat Auburn to make it to Auburn) figures to nullify any computer edge at the end of the day.

Things could also get crazy around Georgia if No. 1 Notre Dame was to lose to Southern Cal, which could potentially mean two SEC teams manage to reach the national title game again.

But all that's left, really is this: This whole BCS pursuit has now gotten a lot simpler for Georgia. No more help is needed. Keep winning, and the Bulldogs are in.
