Coffee: How have mat drills gone?

Friday, March 2

Georgia Bulldogs

Strength coach Joe Tereshinski has orchestrated mat drills for UGA's team this past month.

That returning nightmare known as mat drills ends next Wednesday for Georgia's football team.

That's when the Bulldogs will endure the final weekly mat drills, according to quarterback Aaron Murray. Then comes spring break (and a trip to Key West for many of them), followed by spring practice.

"Mat drills have been tough," receiver Malcolm Mitchell said Thursday. "We had it yesterday, and I was hurting. But that's what it was supposed to do, challenge your mindset and your willpower."

Go here for more background on the mat drills, which returned this year after being left out of the offseason program in 2011.

Part of the reason was to try to better match the "Finish the Drill" motto that UGA's program preaches so often.

"When you’re dead tired or things aren’t going right, be able to suck it up and just keep battling," Murray said. "That’s the whole idea behind mat drills. It’s not fun. I mean, it’s one of the most painful hours of your life, and you just have to suck it up and keep going and find it within you to finish, and I think that’s what we didn’t do last year.

"We had a bunch of great starts and didn’t finish games. So I think this is teaching our guys that you’ve got to finish the drill, our motto all the time. We’re working on it.”

So how have mat drills gone so far?

Well, Murray says the Dogs have faired better in the sessions each week, with Sanders Commings getting two A's in the second week, and Alec Ogletree and Murray also standing out.

"Alec Ogletree, he's stood out a lot," safety Bacarri Rambo said. "I mean, for his first time doing them, he was getting A's since day two. I'm really impressed with his athleticism."
