Interesting story Tuesday from CBSSports' Gary Parrish, who reports that the SEC has changed the upcoming schedule for men's basketball from what was previously discussed in Destin when the coaches agreed to a new format for 14 teams.
The schedule approved for 18 SEC games was each team would play one permanent rival twice every year (South Carolina was Georgia's rival) and then four other home-and-home opponents would rotate.
Basically, the fixed rivals have remained the same, but those other four teams are suddenly different from what coaches thought they would be after the Spring Meetings.
And reports Parrish, "Sources said Georgia's schedule got harder," because of it.
Prior to Monday night's Bulldog Club meeting, I did ask Mark Fox about the schedule, which has yet to be released. Though he didn't make a fuss about the schedule changes, he did say of the four home-and-home opponents, "I think that's changed. So I guess when they finally announce it we'll know for sure. I know we're going to play South Carolina twice."
Did he have any say in the other four home-and-home opponents?
"I requested Florida, but it didn't work out," Fox said.
Fox told fans he expects a final SEC schedule within 7-10 days.
I asked Fox what the hold-up was, saying I thought this would all be settled in Destin.
"Yeah, that's what we probably thought too," Fox said. "I don't know. Probably television, what dates to put what games. ... Let's hope whatever decision we make on the schedule it works out, because I think when we decide it's going to be set for a couple of years."
