Coffee: Recapping the MLB Draft

Thursday, June 7

Georgia Bulldogs

Redshirt sophomore Alex Wood was taken in the second round by the Atlanta Braves, saying soon afterward, "This is a great opportunity to join the Atlanta Braves organization and start a whole new chapter of my baseball career and life."

A total of eight UGA players or signees were selected in the 40 rounds that made up this year's Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

That included the draft's second overall pick in outfielder Byron Buxton and three other picks in the first two rounds, including last season's ace starting pitcher Alex Wood.

While Wood has said he won't be back for his final two years of eligiblity at UGA, instead choosing a career with the Atlanta Braves, there was better news late Wednesday for UGA's current team in that junior shortstop Kyle Farmer is coming back after being drafted by the New York Yankees, according to UGA Sports Communications.

“I’m coming back," Farmer said. "It’s just a gut decision I made on my own. We’ve got a great senior class, and we’re going to take care of business and bring some wins back to Georgia."

In all, MLB teams have until July 13 to sign draft picks.

Here's a summary of UGA's draft contingent ...
