Coffee: Gurley once preferred hoops

Tuesday, August 21

Todd Gurley

Here sat tailback Todd Gurley, a former touted prospect, a budding freshman star at Georgia, explaining how he almost never even played football in high school.

"I wasn't going to play football," Gurley said. "I was just going to take like a break off."

A football standout in eighth grade, Gurley actually didn't go out for the football team as a freshman until a coach convinced him to play five games into the season. He was actually on the junior varsity the next year before turning into the tailback that was signed by UGA and is sure to contribute this season as a rookie.

Gurley's hesistancy at the time may sound strange, but remember that he is from North Carolina -- Eastern North Carolina.

He liked another sport better.

"I started liking basketball a lot," Gurley said. "I just got tired of football a little bit, just watching basketball highlights and stuff like that. I was big on Duke basketball and stuff like that. I just wanted to play basketball."

He did for a while, but "Football started working out pretty good," Gurley says in an obvious understatement, "so I stuck with that."

ON THE AGENDA

After three days in full pads, Georgia's Tuesday football practice is scheduled to be in helmets and shorts prior to Wednesday's practice game at Sanford Stadium.

LINK(S) OF THE DAY

Interesting story here on the language used by Alabama's 3-4 defense, and much of it could apply to UGA's defense.

After all, much of the defensive positional lingo between Alabama and Georgia is the same (such as the Star position that Josh Harvey-Clemons and Malcolm Mitchell are both learning), except Georgia's "Will" is the hybrid OLB/DE that Alabama calls the "Jack." And Alabama's "Will" is the second ILB spot that Georgia calls the "Mo."

And guess who leads the SEC in this year's party school rankings?
