Gonna need MAD hangtime from this guy, I don't think there's any secret that our coverage teams weren't exactly stellar last year. If he can make those returners wait for the ball it makes the job of coverage a lot easier.

    • The performance by our punters at G-Day was woeful, to say the least. Barber is going to win this job barring injury; there's really no other option. We have a pretty good track record of freshmen kickers coming in and performing well, hopefully Barber continues that with a solid 2012 summer, fall practice, and season.

I don't think anyone really complimented Drew Butler on his hangtime in his 4 years at UGA. And Drew knew that. He tried working on it, but was never able to get there consistently.

I appreciate all that Drew did for the Bulldawgs, but I am anxiously awaiting an opportunity for Colin to show what he can bring to the kicking game.

I know how this is gonna sound on the surface but I'd rather have a guy that put it in the air for 3-4 seconds than a guy that can punt the ball 40-50 yards but the ball is there in 2-3 seconds, and not that I'm blaming Drew Butler solely for the poor coverage but there is such a thing as "out kicking your coverage". Now some of our problems were obviously related to who was on those kick coverage teams, but I just think it's essential that we do our very best to give those guys as much time as possible to get down and cover those kicks.

      I agree with you.

Butler wasn't a 2 second hang time guy. His hang time was as good as the average punter. He just put it 10+ yards further downfield (giving the return guy some more space to get started). The definition of outkicking the coverage.

The falcons led the league in net punting yards a couple of years ago. But they were middle of the pack in punt distance ((teams rarely even tried a return). It's seeing the forest from the trees. Net yardage is what matters most.

    • Barber is an extremely important player for UGA in 2012.

Look at Brad Wing for LSU. I have never been more impressed with a punters performance than Brad Wing in the SEC Championship game. LSU's punt coverage in general was amazing the entire season. I dont remember the exact numbers but I believe they rarely even allowed a punt to be returned at all in 2011.

With all the five star kids we got in the 2012 recruiting class Barber, and Morgan might be the two most important incoming playerss for our immediate success in 2012. Morgan will probably be very high on this list.

    • Collins posted on twitter a couple of days ago:

Punting the ball across the field and over the UGA tract stadium!! Est. 70 - 80 yards with 5.5 hangs! #winning#dawgnation

I hope that he can repeat similar numbers in the season. Those sound like Brad Wing numbers. He is a game changer for LSU.

    • Meanwhile, Butler was the greatest punter UGA ever had...

Not perfect at all, but I'd take 4 more years of Butler in a heartbeat.

Chip Andrews might have an argument in that discussion.

Gordon Ely Kelso was very good, but probably not as good as Drew.

    • The kickers are the two players I look forward to seeing the most. Collin looks and sounds like a game changer, I just hope he can duplicate those kicks in pads....

I agree with you as well good sir, it's just as important to limit those return yard as it is to get the ball punted a pretty good distance into our opponents territory.
