Georgia's team was scheduled to practice this afternoon.

Instead, the Bulldogs went swimming at the Ramsey Center.

The announcement was made just now to the team in the locker room, drawing an enormous response and cheer that shook the walls in the floor above at the Butts-Mehre building.

“You think of a way that you can get the emotion of it," Mark Richt said. "You’ve got to do it on a day where they’re missing practice. You’ve got to do it on a day like today. Today was scheduled to be a 20-period, physical, fundamental day. Those are the days where if you get out of a day like that, they’re excited. So we want them to really feel like they’re getting something out of this thing, and I think we got them pretty good.”

This has been something of a tradition around UGA's program under Richt, though the Bulldogs did not do it during the preseason last year, instead opting to go during the bye week later in the season.

For those following at home ...
Practice is tentatively scheduled to begin around 4:35 p.m., which means media will probably get to make our way out there around 5 p.m. or so, and Richt should be available around 6:45 p.m.
Today could be mildly interesting -- if only because we haven't gotten much access to the team this week. Practices have been completely closed since Monday, and we didn't even get an injury report Thursday, so there could possibly be a few surprises on that front today.
Meanwhile, Georgia is likely to continue scout team prep for Buffalo (and Missouri) through today's practice and tomorrow morning's practice, which will be the final workout before game week.

OK, well this clearly removes the planned practice report and practice updates today.
But there still should be interviews after the swimming excursion. So keep it here for updates from Richt ...

Richt: "There might have been a better day to do it somewhere along the way. There's got to be that element of surprise and that element of trying to catch them off guard. Richt said Jonathan Taylor also put on a life jacket and jumped off big platform ... Four guys had to jump out and drag him in
Cornelius Washington had never jumped off the top platform ... "He wanted to make sure he had no regrets leaving Georgia having not jumped off the 10-meter."

Richt said they could make up today's practice but they aren't planning to. As it stands now, UGA will have 28 (out of 29 allowable) preseason practices.
