Morning Coffee: Around the SEC

Monday, November 12

A review of the past weekend of in the SEC ...

The week that was
Florida 27, Louisiana-Lafayette 20 (Gainesville)
South Carolina 38, Arkansas 20 (Columbia)
Missouri 51, Tennessee 48 (4 OT) (Knoxville)
Texas A&M 29, Alabama 24 (Tuscaloosa)
Georgia 38, Auburn 0 (Auburn)
LSU 37, Mississippi State 17 (Baton Rouge)
Vanderbilt 27, Ole Miss 26 (Oxford)

The big result
A week after a big win at LSU, top-ranked Alabama suffered the hangover loss, falling at home versus an inspired effort by upset-minded Texas A&M. Alabama can still clinch the SEC West by beating Auburn. Meanwhile, Georgia did clinch the SEC East by beating Auburn on Saturday night.

The big story
It was a huge weekend for the SEC's newcomers, with the two of them winning in two of the conference's most storied venues. Texas A&M scored the major upset in Tuscaloosa, while Missouri hung in there to score late and force overtime in order to win at Neyland Stadium.

The heartstopper(s)
It was a good one in Oxford, where Vanderbilt came back to score in the final minute and edge Ole Miss to become bowl eligible again this year.

Meanwhile, Florida scored two touchdowns in the game's final 1:42, including a blocked punt return with two seconds left, to overcome a 20-13 deficit and survive a serious upset bid from Louisiana-Lafayette.

What a huge result for the Aggies, who now can finish 10-2 by closing out with wins over Sam Houston State and Missouri.

The Gators haven't lost to Missouri or Louisiana-Lafayette the past two weeks. But such close calls make you wonder about that Nov. 24 game at Florida State.
