Morning Coffee: Around the SEC

Monday, November 5

This weekend brought an official end to Joker Phillips' tenure in Lexington.

A look at the weekend that was in the SEC and a peak at the one ahead ..

The week that was
Alabama 21, LSU 17 (at Baton Rouge)
Auburn 42, New Mexico State 7 (at Auburn)
Florida 14, Missouri 7 (at Gainesville)
Georgia 37, Ole Miss 10 (at Athens)
Vanderbilt 40, Kentucky 0 (at Lexington)
Texas A&M 38, Mississippi State 13 (at Starkville)
Tennessee 55, Troy 48 (at Knoxville)
Arkansas 19, Tulsa 15 (at Fayetteville)

The big result
Top-ranked Alabama was pushed to the wire by LSU before the Crimson Tide scored with 51 seconds left to reclaim the lead and a dramatic win in Baton Rouge. Alabama can clinch the SEC West by beating Texas A&M this weekend.

The big story
The day after a 40-point loss to Vanderbilt, Kentucky moved on head coach Joker Phillips, making two head coaching searches and counting in the SEC this offseason.

The heartstopper
Tennessee set a new school record with 718 yards Saturday but was actually outgained by Troy. The Trojans' 721 yards gained was an all-time low for the Vols, who somehow survived a 55-48 shootout before a less-than-packed Neyland Stadium.

Trending up
ALABAMA
Every title season seems to have a gutcheck, and Nick Saban's team may have just survived its close call. The LSU game was an instant classic and a huge win for the Crimson Tide.

TEXAS A&M
That said, watch out for the team headed to Tuscaloosa next week. Texas A&M pounded a good Mississippi State team in Starkville this weekend and is good enough to cause a lot of trouble if the Crimson Tide gets caught napping after the LSU win.

Trending down
KENTUCKY
We're not going to kick Joker Phillips when he's down. Just look at the Vandy score. It tells you all you need to know.

MISSISSIPPI STATE
The joy of that 7-0 start is gone after a 31-point loss to Alabama followed by a 25-point loss to Texas A&M. LSU, Arkansas and Ole Miss wait to close out a brutal finishing stretch for the Bulldogs.
