Georgia's new "2012" sign went up Monday in the team meeting room. To the left is the red listing of SEC championships. To the right is the black listing of national champions.
For Georgia's football team the next two weeks, the elephant in the room has a name: "Big Al."
Mark Richt is trying to keep attention away from that pending SEC title game showdown with Alabama and keep his team focused on upcoming games against Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech.
But it's not easy, not with Georgia and Alabama sharing the final spots in the top five of the BCS, meaning that matchup (tentative until Alabama beats Auburn) in Atlanta could have major national implications as well.
"In the past years I've been here, you're not used to seeing that," cornerback Sanders Commings said. "You turn the TV (and the BCS show) on and you see that, and you're like, 'Oh wait, that's us. That's Georgia.' It's a great feeling."
"I haven’t talked to them about it," said Mark Richt when asked about the BCS noise going around. "We just talk about focusing on Georgia Southern. I don’t know how often they look at that or think about that.”
Cornerback Sanders Commings, however, said Richt did give a little nod to the bigger prizes during a team meeting Monday, when he pointed to the new "2012" sign under the program's SEC East titles (pictured).
"Coach Richt pointed it out in the team meeting," Commings said. "He was like, 'We've got the silver one. That's the SEC East. We have our ticket to play for the red one. We win that one, we'll have our ticket to play for the black one, and the black was the national championship. That's definitely the goal. That's what we're shooting for."
Other players fielded questions about the BCS goals Tuesday.
"It's cool to see," quarterback Aaron Murray said. "I think it definitely excites our guys. There's nothing wrong with thinking big and dreaming big. But just make sure that we focus on these two weeks and finish this regular season off strong."
"That's the ultimate goal for us, let's be honest," receiver Tavarres King said. "But right now we've got to take care of Georgia Southern and Tech. Then we'll worry about that.
