Christian LeMay's wristbands
Georgia linebacker Christian Robinson wears a band on his wrist that reads "I AM SECOND."
"It reminds me every day that I'm not the most important," Robinson explained. "I really think about that daily. It's something small, but it's just a reminder."
Many of the Bulldogs' football players wear similar wristbands on and off the field.
None of them, however, can outnumber on quarterback Christian LeMay, who sports six bands on each of his wrists (see picture) at all times. Three on each wrist are "silly bands," he said, that are kind of like rubber bands and they signify family.
"I remember a couple of these I got from my sister and I got one from my niece," LeMay said, "so they're not coming off."
The thicker bands each have a meaning. One on each wrist are to represent high school classmates who died, including the blue "Where there's a will, there's a way," on LeMay's right wrist.
A green one reading, "An audience of one," according to LeMay, "is obviously spoken." Also religious in meaning, the third thick band on his right wrist is from his home church near Charlotte, N.C., and highlights the Bible verse 2 Corinthians 2:14: "Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place."
On his left wrist, LeMay wears three more thick bands. He points out a black-and-white checkered out that pays tribute to a high school classmate who died (in 2008) on LeMay's own birthday.
"The thing about this one, I wear it every day and look it at," LeMay said. "Whenever I'm going through the worst of times, I look at the date and know that somebody died the day I was born. The day that I celebrate another year of life, a family is mourning someone that didn't quite make it."
The "Live Strong" band references the Lance Armstrong Foundation, though LeMay says with a laugh, "I don't know if I want to wear this with Lance's situation right now."
And then there is Georgia football band, "To bring it all back," LeMay said. "It kind of circles around from here."
"Even in the hardest times," he said, "you can just look down and these bands have a lot of meaning to me. It just reminds me there's something outside of football and just to have fun, really."
