Mark Fox knows what time it is -- at least in the Southeast.
"You guys ready? When's football practice start?," Fox said as he greeted reporters Monday night in Atlanta.
Georgia's basketball coach exited the recruiting trail for one night to attend a final Bulldog Club gathering this year. He received a standing ovation from a ballroom full of fans despite being slightly off-topic for this time of the year.
Nonetheless, your coffee today is a rundown of some offseason hoops topics, courtesy of Fox ...
-- All five of the program's 2011 signees are now on campus, according to Fox. They are Tim Dixon, John Florveus, Nemanja Djurisic, John Cannon and blue-chipper Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. All are 6-6 or taller.
-- UGA has four scholarships to offer next year's class, according to Fox. The Bulldogs picked up their first 2012 commitment Friday in the form of point guard Charles Mann.
"You obviously had to address the point guard situation," Fox said, "and we're trying to add offense. We're always looking for guys who can finish plays."
-- Caldwell-Pope will play both the No. 2 and No. 3 guard spots this season, considering the positions are "very similar" and "Somebody could easily play both spots," said Fox, who added of his prized signee, "He's really an impact player, but he doesn't walk around like he's any different than anybody else. And I love that about him."
-- Fox didn't have much to say about the UGA compliance investigation into allegations of possibly improper benefits tied to Caldwell-Pope's Columbus AAU team: "You don't ever want these situations, but I think it'll be handled appropriately. There's really not much I can do. It's not a decision I'm going to make.
-- Incoming big man Florveus is up to about 225 pounds, according to Fox: "He's all of 6-10, and he's a good athlete at that length too."
-- The SEC schedule format for 2012-13 remains uncertain after the league opted to end divisional play in men's basketball during the spring meetings in Sandestin, Fla.
"We've had a lot of talk about going to 18 games, some talk about going to 22 games," Fox said. "I don't think the momentum is nearly as strong for 22 as it is for 18. ... If you ask people in the room who their rival is, there were some differing opinions. I think we should always play the teams in the East twice.
-- As for non-conference scheduling, Remember this tidbit from Fox about wanting to play North Carolina? Well, there's nothing more to report there. Said Fox, "We haven't had that conversation yet."
-- Believe it or not, the NFL lockout may have delayed the finalization of college basketball schedules for next season.
"Our TV schedule probably was impacted by that," Fox said. "So if that's behind us, hopefully we can at least get some information."
