A question for your Coffee this morning ...
Is Georgia set at the kicker and punter positions for the next three years or is there a surprise in store there?
When this topic was raised on his Monday night call-in radio show, Mark Richt indicated that UGA is not recruiting any other kickers or punters right now. And it didn't sound like he planned on doing that any time soon.
“Right now, I’ve got a lot of faith in (freshman) Marshall Morgan. I’ve got a lot of faith in (freshman) Collin Barber," Richt said. "I think that we’ll be in good shape with those guys. We’re not actively recruiting anybody right now. ... I’m not going to say that a young man can’t come and beat them out. But you really don’t want to spend a lot of scholarships on your kickers if you can help it. Some people don’t spend scholarships on them period until they prove themselves as walk-ons and then give them a scholarship.”
Barber is coming off his best game at Georgia, having booted a 60-yard punt against Ole Miss and another that was downed inside the Rebels' 5-yard line that turned into a safety.
Morgan, however, badly hooked a 47-yard field goal try, continuing an up-and-down season for him. He has made field goals of 50 and 52 yards, but he has missed an attempt each of the past two games and is 37-of-41 on his extra points this season.
“If (Barber) does get to where he can consistency do what his abilities can do, I think everybody is going to be really thrilled with him," Richt said. "And Marshall has got plenty of leg and plenty of ability. He’s just got to get to where his fundamentals are so air-tight that he’ll be more accurate on his kicks.”
One interesting question raised during this radio show discussion was a caller who mentioned quarterback commit Brice Ramsey's talent as a kicking specialist.
NCAA rules didn't allow Richt to discuss Ramsey specifically.
“I cannot comment on any prospect and what he might could do for the Bulldogs publicly," Richt said. "But if anybody that we have on our team has the ability to do it and can do a better job than the current kicker or punter or snapper or holder then they certainly would have an opportunity to win the job. There’s no doubt about that.”
