When Mark Richt's new contract was released in June, there was a new line in there saying that he was expected to keep "to a minimum" the recruitment of JUCO players. That minimum would be determined by Richt and AD Greg McGarity.
While UGA's team currently does not have many junior college players, that could change very soon. Four junior college players -- OL Trenton Brown, DB Shaquille Fluker, DL Chris Mayes (a former UGA signee) and DB Steven Nelson -- are currently committed to UGA's 2013 class, and the Bulldogs are recruiting others, most notably DL Toby Johnson and WR Jonathan Rumph.
"If you're going to sign a relatively large class, I think you would like to have some age difference," Richt explained Monday. "If every single guy you bring in is a freshman, that's a lot of freshmen to have in one class. So you do want to break it up with some junior college guys, so you don't have too many guys at one position in the same class."
As for how many is too many in terms of that contract, "I don't know," Richt said.
"What happens is if you sign a lot of junior college kids then sometimes you get into that cycle where you have to continue to do it," Richt said. "We've never since I've been at Georgia built our classes around the absolute necessity of bringing in a junior college (player). ... It's normally been predicated on a need at any one given position if there's attrition. Sometimes you need some help, and you need some help from a mature guy, physical and football-wise, that might be able to come in and play for you right away. And every once in a while if there's just a superior talent at a certain position, if he can upgrade you immediately you go for him too. I think if you look at all the years I've been at Georgia, we haven't done that a lot. I don't know really for sure why it was in there, because I don't think there was any history of us doing that a lot. But this year in particular, we have a lot of kids that we're going to bring in, so I think it is good to break it up with some age differences."

ON THE AGENDA
Georgia will hold its final closed scrimmage of the preseason this afternoon at Sanford Stadium, though this one is referred to as a "practice game" for the opener. Stats and reaction should be available, as always, after the 5 p.m. scrimmage.

If you've even been curious how Georgia's football program might get covered in jolly old England, here is a fascinating example from Alex Ferguson and Sky Sports.
And UGA receives props here for two things: Football and partying.
