UGA confirmed Grantham's departure Sunday.
Per ESPN's Joe Schad, Grantham is to receive a salary of $1 million for a five-year deal at Louisville.
Bulldogs athletics director Greg McGarity said Grantham notified him Saturday of interest from Louisville, but McGarity was not told by Grantham that he had taken the job.
Grantham has not been available for comment.
This news on Grantham came as a surprise to many around the Bulldogs' team, including players on the Bulldogs' defense.
Grantham is set to leave his post at UGA after four seasons, the final one being a tumultuous campaign that had many calling his job security into question. Richt had said he wished to retain all assistants from this past season.
Alabama staffer Kevin Steele previously turned down the Louisville job in recent days.
