*** Game preview from Michigan State angle

  • OK, this might be the longest single post I have ever read on 247Sports, and it's worth your time to sort through if you have a chance ...

Outback Bowl Preview: MSU vs. UGA

Quite frankly, this might be the most in-depth preview of anything ever and finishes off with a prediction you may be interested in ...

  • I think these teams are as evenly matched as they can be. The final score is going to be really close and I would not be surprised to see the same score Rocky predicted with Georgia coming out on top.

Should be one of the best bowl games that isn't all based on defense. I think a late 4th down stop by one of the teams is what seals the deal. I fully expect this to come down to the 4th quarter.

  • Dang, did it take this writer a couple of weeks to put this article together? I dont think I have read any pregame report more in depth than this one. Great job to this writer. We are Georgia, SEC! Georgia will win by 2 to 3 td's!

SpartanRocky has done these previews for every game. He usually does them in 4 parts, released during the week prior to the game, one per day (Overview, MSU O vs. opponent D, MSU D vs. opponent O, and Special Teams & Prediction).

In this case, he put it all into one preview.

Georgia won't win by 2-3 TDs because we'll distract you by throwing snowballs.

  • Macks, great reply.Lmao. I am not taking anything away from MSU. I think that the Dawgs will play a complete game. They will have to! No question that you guys have a good football team...........What can I say, I am very biased. Have a great New Years!

Sadly that's the 4th longest preview I've written this year, behind the opener, the Michigan game and the conference championship game previews. lol I try to leave no stone unturned.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I appreciate the strength of the SEC in general, and Georgia specifically. At the same time, it's hard to ignore that MSU's defense is only a few yards/game behind UGA's overall and actually allows a couple fewer PPG than Georgia. As I noted, MSU has actually faced better offenses as a whole than Georgia has this season.

On the flip side, Georgia has faced better defenses than the Spartans by about the same margin. Ergo, the MSU D is probably better than their stats indicate, as is UGA's offense, particularly your passing offense.

My issue with UGA's offense has been the flux at the RB position. I know Samuel is a fan favorite, but as I see it, IC is having some sort of non-football issue, Malcome hasn't really established himself and Samuel is still getting back from the ankle injury.

Georgia can't afford to get into 3rd and long; I highlighted the massive drop in efficiency that Murray suffers once the down gets to 3rd and 7 or longer. On the flip side, Kirk Cousins actually plays better at the longer 3rd down distance. Given the strength of both squad's run D's, you have to figure that Cousins will be a nice advantage for the Spartans.

Additionally, the Special Teams issues could really hurt Georgia in this game. I checked: Georgia has the 119th ranked punt return defense, while MSU has the #15 punt return unit (aka, Keshawn Martin). Similarly, the Spartans boast the better kick returner and UGA's KR D is not good either. All in all, that could add up to good field position for MSU, which could negate the overall strength of the Bulldogs' defense.

At the same time, I could see Georgia's front 7 overwhelming the Spartans' offensive line and put any thought of offensive success out of reach.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • This is one of the better write UPS I have seen. I thinly Uga wins, but it will be close. I don't see the 2 to 3 rd difference. The sec is the best conference, but the big 10 may be second. Msu is good. Uga has slightly more speed. Uga wins 20-17.

I must say that i enjoyed reading your article. Very thorough analysis. I am verymuch looking forward to this game. I was also at the last meeting between these two team. I also must admit that I have enjoyed the sportsmanship of the MSU fans both at the previous meeting and this one. The MSU fans have been first class. I am sure that this will be a good hard fought game. Now GATA! Go Dawgs!

Nope, just have a very understanding girlfriend (and 3+ weeks between the CCG and the bowl game) combined with taking every day but one off of work this week lol. During the season it's a bit easier because I know the Big 10 pretty well.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Right back at you. The Georgia fans have been fantastic over the past month on here and I'm really looking forward to this game.

I picked MSU, but what you guys don't know is that it's my schtick to pick MSU to win every game (I don't really care about the final score prediction, it's all about the match-up analysis for me), so don't read too much into that. It can really go to either team and it should look like a game between 2 top 20 teams, maybe even a pair of top 15 squads.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Rocky, I certainly hope the MSU football team was not as detailed oriented in their game prep as you have been. Holy smokes...

    It's all right, Rock.

I'm sure if you polled this board, the overwhelming majority had us winning against UCF last season, too.

I'm about to finish the article now. Good stuff.
