Post-game Thoughts from an MSU fan

  • Hey everyone! I said I'd be back here win, lose or draw. Here are my observations:

    1) UGA fans were fantastic at the game, truly a class act, much like your players and coach. Georgia is now my favorite SEC team.

    2) I've always thought that it was front 7 speed that set the SEC apart from the Big 10, but this time around it was perimeter speed. Boykin exceeded my expectations several times over; kid will have a great NFL career.

    3) Georgia has offensive line issues. The biggest advantage either team had was the MSU front 7 v. the UGA OL/running game, and that's really what ended up winning the game for MSU.

    4) Good lord is your team talented and athletic, particularly on defense. There were times it seemed like UGA was playing with 15 guys on defense. I was impressed MSU only gave up 1 sack, but the lack of a running game kept the offense stagnant for much of the game.

    5) On that note, I felt that both squads lived up to their rankings: top 5 Ds and top 30-ish overall Os. Both QBs faced aggressive pass-rushes and ball-hawking secondaries, leading to two of the rougher statistical performances of the season for both. Very impressed with Aaron Murray, really reminds me of a young Drew Brees. He'll grow from this experience for sure and should be the best QB in the SEC over the next few years. Ironically enough, the CB that picked Murray twice (Darqueze Dennard) was a 2-star prospect from GA that no BCS conf. team in the South wanted. Just goes to show you that sometimes good players slip through the cracks.

    6) Both OCs had some pretty big brain farts in this one. MSU calling a behind the LOS pass from their own 1/2 yardline?! UGA running draws up the middle on 1st and 2nd down when they were being stuffed for either no gain or a loss? Felt MSU was totally out of sync in the 1st half (mostly due to UGA's D) and UGA's O was really out of whack with the exception of those 2 long pass plays. Both squads struggled to put a decent drive together, which I think vindicated both defenses, despite the score being in the 30s.

    7) I really feel bad for Blair Walsh. Not sure why he's struggled this year, but that's a terrible way to end a great career.

    8) I felt that both squads had chances to ice the game before OT, but the opposing Ds were just too good. This game was played at a high level overall and I expect we'll be seeing many members of both defenses pop up on NFL rosters in the next few years.

    9) Off of #8, would anyone in their right mind object if MSU - UGA was the Sugar Bowl instead of the Outback? After watching that game last night I'm convinced either the Spartans or Bulldogs would have beaten either UM or Va. Tech by 2 TDs+.

    10) Thank you all for allowing me to post on your site over the past month. You showed me nothing but class and respect; something that I'll always appreciate and reciprocate. I'd expect UGA to start out next season somewhere in the top 15 and to be in contention for the national title. Another year in the 3-4, the maturation of the running backs and Murray (as well as those young WRs) should have you guys winning your division with ease and set up an epic clash in the SEC championship game.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Yeah, Rock, I was pretty pissed off about losing. Then, after looking at it again, I realized y'all had a pretty damn good team.

That challenge Dantonio called was a phenomenal job of coaching. Your recent success is a testament to his coaching abilities.

Congratulations on a hard fought, come from behind win against another pretty good team. I hope MSU continues to be successful.

  • Great post and I would agree with your points. Thanks for the nice comments about the fans. Glad you recognized that - however for future reference - beware that we have our share of horrible fans and in case you run into them they do not represent the fan base but we have some bad seeds like I am sure other teams do as well.

I think the UGA vs MSU game was one of the better bowls we have seen and lived up to the rankings, statistics, et cetera. It was actually good to see the MSU seniors get that last one after all their trials and tribulations they have been through. But always painful to lose on the opposite side. This when the psychos in our fan base come out and post on the boards everywhere.

  • Rocky, your fans were great as well! I was so impressed with your defensive line, but yes, we knew about our offensive line issues. I said before the game that my greatest concerns were Gohlston and Worthy. I actually think that we can be better on the OL next year with a good season of S&C. Best of luck to you guys next year!

  • Big fan of Dantonio. Y'all have a really good one up there. And Cousins is one classy cat. I'm sure y'all are sad to see him go.

Congrats on a great season and an elusive bowl win against the SEC. Build on it - we'd much rather play y'all than that arseclown Urban Liar in a bowl game.

You guys should be fine; you just need some true OTs. As good as Murray has been, he'll only get better as the receiving corp matures.

One thing that shocked me that I ommitted was that Orson Charles was completely taken out of the game. I was in the stadium so I didn't have the option of rewinding the DVR, but I was very surprised to see the 1st team AA have 1 catch for 2 yards.

as were we...I think more MSU gameplan IMO which was part of why we were able to get deep on single coverage several times.

You guys earned this victory. I didn't think MSU would quit when it was 16-0, but when we went up 27-20, I thought we had you for sure. It's a credit to your players and coaches who seemed to refuse to lose (sorry Turbo, I meant loose)

  • Rock,
You're a great representative for the good things in college football.
The fans are what make college football so much fun (players come and go. it's the spirit of the fanbases that brings me to the altar of Bulldawg football every season).

I wish you and the Spartans the best next season.
That was a whale of a game, wasn't it?

  • On point no. 9...I agree. UM looked like crap last night. MSU and Boise were robbed.

Clemson and WVU look pretty freaking terrible tonight as well.

Rose and Fiesta bowls were pretty fun though.

Thank you sir, you guys were all great. Hell of a game and probably the best bowl game so far, though the Rose and Fiesta were pretty entertaining. Shocked at the overall lack of defense at the highest level games though; UM/Va.Tech was low scoring because the teams couldn't get out of their own way.
