*** SEC Spring Meetings LIVE thread (Wed)

  • It's day two in Destin and the final full day where much will be reported from the league's coaches and ADs. News will slow considerably after today as the school presidents take the lead.

Today will be a bit different from yesterday, as the various media sessions have stopped (probably meaning fewer updates) and coaches and ADs get down to business with the voting process, which should conclude around noon Central time.

Hopefully, we'll get some idea how it went this morning, and then Mike Slive will sum up the daily events later this evening

Keep it here for updates ...

  • Pretty quiet in the Hilton lobby right about now, except Billy Donovan just walked past my table. The coaches are going to break and meet with the ADs to go over everything in a big meeting. Word is that will break around 2 p.m. Central or so.

Kind of unpredictable who will talk and when after the meetings get out, but we'll have something, I'm sure ...

  • To pass the time (while we wait for meetings to break) and basically explain what is taking place today, here is how Greg McGarity explained it ...

"We'll basically hear what their vote is. We won't override the coaches. It's just they have a vote, we have a vote, basketball coaches have a vote. Then and at the end of the day the presidents take all that information and meet and say, 'OK, we'll cast our vote this way.'"

  • Football coaches have now broken their meeting and headed upstairs to sit down with the ADs. On stake-out duty and should get something from the football meetings within the hour, I hope.

  • Ok football meetings out ...

    Per Richt ...

-- Spurrier's division plan didn't have enough support

-- The big question appears to be schedule format and the 6-1-1 idea with a permanent rival. There was not a consensus among coaches on that one, so there is a bit of a question mark there.

These seemed to be the main issues among football.

More later, specifically on the schedule stuff, which looks to be the big story today.

  • Spoke with McGarity and Tennessee AD Dave Hart, neither of whom were willing to say for sure that permanent opponents will happen, though both were hopeful.

"I anticipate that by the time we see you Friday afternoon, we'll have a format," Slive said.

  • A nine-game SEC football schedule was discussed today

"Whether or not it has any serious traction is another question," Slive said.

  • Asked about the idea of Georgia-Auburn and Bama-UT being only fixed games and everyone rotates ...

"We have looked at that. There's some real complexities to that. It's a nice solution if it's available."

  • Richt did say that the 6-1-1 format would mean that the final game would rotate every year. There would not be a home and home before that last team rotates on and off the schedule.

  • McGarity was asked if the league did go to nine SEC games if he would ever consider dropping the Georgia Tech game ...

"Whew, not during my watch," he replied. "That would be probably be much more passionate than any non-Eastern (SEC) rivalry."

I really applaud that option...compete against west rivals on a more frequent basis!!
