A One Half Team and Nonsense Play Calling

  • richtfan said...

i'm calling BS on that. the OC is totally responsible for all aspects of the offense including what results or lack thereof that all offensive position coaches achieve. it is totally mike's responsibility in both the good and the bad.

the facts are that when we needed to have a running game, we didn't have it.

He is responsible but at some point - your players have to execute. when your OL does not execute on simple run blocking then what do you do then.

Hopefully we will address the OL issues and will be much brighter in the fall of 2012. I think it will definitely help us not having a big fat ass OL and have more healthy and athletic OL. Size was a problem. Our OL was to big. Hopefully we can get guys in the right place as well and position they belong in. Depth forced us to have Glenn at LT and Anderson at RT and Burnette at RG. Burnette needs to be on the bench. Glenn and Andersen are both guards not tackles.

Bobo gets conservative and predictable when we don't execute. The OL caused a lot of issues and failed to execute and that leads to why we run up the middle for nothing instead of running outside and losing yards.

However, I will concede that he should have looked at other options like reverse, screen, or something. But there is no gaurantee - if the OL had not blocked on a reverse, then you still get a loss on the play - just a bigger loss than normal. They did try one with Branden Smith that did not get anywhere.

I don't think there is a single pointed issue to resolve our problem other than a clear issue - we need more DEPTH on the OL and DL.

"We didn't execute"... Coach speak for I failed.

Guess what Michigan States o-line wasn't "executing" against JJ and company early on and guess what? Their coaches changed protections schemes mid game. They started keeping in their backs and TE's, chipped, cut, down blocked, used misdirections, ANYTHING to slow us down. Jarvis has a re-sprained MCL to prove it. It's about adjusments. Michgan States coaches showed they could actually coach during a game. Our coaches? They did nothing.

  • You imply that Grantham stinks because Mich St made adjustments and he did nothing to stop it.

The fact of the matter is that there are personnel matchups which cause problems for our defense. Even at full strength, we struggle to cover tight ends and runningbacks as receivers. Even at full strength, we struggle to stop a big back who bounces the play outside at our safeties and CBs. To a lesser extent, because of our LBs focusing on the run game we can give up chunks of yards on WR slants across the middle.

These are personnel issues. Not playcall/scheme issues.

Did you identify personnel issues where we could exploit Mich St? I did. Boykin and T King were about it. We didn't have the luxuries on offense that they had. And that stems from calling plays for a whipped offensive line.

  • I do have one glaring statistic...if Bobo is such a great coach, then how come the only assistant we are worried about leaving is Grantham? I haven't heard Bobo's name in head coaching searches in the past four years?

Life's tough, but it is tougher if you're stupid.

Grantham is 45 years old with 21 years coaching experience.

Bobo is 37 and has been coaching for 11.

I'm not making excuses for Bobo. Just stating the facts. Which resume speaks more volumes to you?

Put another way... Charlie Strong is 50 years old, has been coaching since 1983, and just got his first HC gig in 2010.

This isn't a conference call, Hinkle. Coaches usually have to ETR (Earn The Right) before they make the jump.

Ellis Johnson is 60 years old, has been coaching since 1975, had a brief stint as HC at The Citadel at the age of 50 and was just named the Head Coach of Southern Miss.

I have never heard Bobo throw his name into the ring for a HC vacancy. But if he did, these are the guys that he'd be competing against.

Is it sinking in why he hasn't been tabbed yet? 37 years old. 11 years coaching experience.
