Alford: I'd commit if offered

  • Good grief some of you guys are such Chicken Littles.

First off, Grantham and Olivadotti have their own type of guys they look for. It's why they let a guy like Holsey go and took a guy like Dawson. They look at more than just "stars" and what they are ranked as. They are not going to offer someone unless they feel that person will contribute or have the ability to contribute. They look for someone to fit Grantham's scheme. It's the reason why we didn't offer Darby. He didn't fit Grantham's scheme.

They don't need WRs nor do they need RBs cause they have 2 coming in, and will have 2 committed for 2013 soon. (Henry already) You do not offer a guy who hasn't played much CB at that position unless you EVALUATE him. And you don't just do it by tape, cause there's not much tape of him at CB.

Calm down and let this play out. If they don't offer him, in this instance, you SHOULD trust the coaches cause Grantham was doing this in the NFL and he's bringing that expertise and evaluation to Athens.

    KILL EM ALL

  • I agree across the board here. We have a lot of open positions and this kid would instantly be one of the fastest on the team. And maybe Lakatos doesn't love his height, but as has been said, we could use him in a # of areas. Plus, after kicking out Chris Sanders and Nick Marshall, we need another body in there. The kid wants to come here.

I envision a typical Georgia outcome where we drag our feet for so long, that another SEC team swoops in while we twiddle our thumbs. Good grief, Richt, we have a LOT of open schollies - please sign this kid.

  • As Huie said above, let's be patient. It's barely a week after signing day, sever days of which the coaches were off.

  • Maybe they have not offered because they are waiting to hear what happens with Sanders Cummings. I think we should not sign him, to allow us to offer 2013 recruits a inviting depth chart.

  • I would imagine the coaches are explaining the situation to the kid, whatever that may be. We all have to realize that we are almost always going to be viewing things based on incomplete information. Rusty does a great job, but short of being in on every conversation between the coaches and the kids there is always going to be some things going on we simply can't know. If something is that obvious to me (we need db's, the kid has speed, etc., etc), I assume the coaches are aware of it, too.

  • What get's me, is how we pursue the kids that love to string you a long only to sign with some other team, yet we have a talented kid like this right here instate, ready to be a dawg and we tell him we'll get back with you? Makes no sense to me when we have more than enough schollies! Does CMR and staff not relieves that as soon as one of our competitors find him it may be to late!!!

  • I think the last thing we should be worrying about is defensive eval's and if Grantham and Lakotos like a kid. Do we need bodies? Yes.

Right now Grantham and company have my full trust in who they offer and what they are doing with our defensive recruits.

  • I'm sure there is a method to the madness (if you will) with the coach's decisions on Alford. I would take a shot with this kid for sure. With 4/3 yrs, at the very least he could red shirt this season and learn the scheme. Then turn him loose in 2013 wherever he fits in the best. But then again, I'm not coaching D-1 football. MR and TG know what they are doing.. Just my twocents

  • Pull the trigger CMR, this young man wants to be a dawg. I can see him playing as a nickle back on defense and an explosive slot receiver on the offensive side of the ball, like N.E. uses Wes Welker! We have more than enough schollies so what is the hold up? We need to move on him before some one else does!!!

  • why have we not signed this kid yet???? Heck didn't we give Sailors a scholly? I'm sure this kid could be just as good on special teams. And even if he doesn't make it as a DB he could play 3-4 other spots on the field. Plus he wants to be a DAWG!!! go get him CMR.. We need more kids that want more to be Dawgs than to make it to the NFL.

  • I know Lakatos likes taller DBs, but if this kid is so athletic we could use him.

I remember several years ago when on NSD we make an offer late in the day to a kid from SC whose only other offer was from SCState. The only reason he got our offer was that some "big fish" we sought signed with someone else (I don't even remember his name now).

Turned out the kid we signed made an immediate impact and by the middle of his true freshman year was starting, even though he was under 5'10". He ended up as a four-year starter who consistently made open field tackles.

The kid was Tim Jennings, who for no other reason will always be considered a DGD for saving a win over GT by jumping a route late in the game and intercepting a pass intended for 6'5' Calvin Johnson.

How many times have we seen Commings miss an open field tackle? If Alford is athletic enough to tackle, we should take him no matter his size.

  • Once again UGA coaches are just too slow to react... Dont be surprised for another school to come in and offer this kid before UGA and he not end up with us. Just like so many others that would kill to play at UGA... then we dont offer, someone else does and we are late to the party. That routine gets very old some times... hope they get this one right. With 7 open ships available... i think you can afford to get this done!

I have no idea what it is but the coaches must have some good reason for not already having done so.

I know what you said has been true in the past. I've just got to trust them on this delayed offer thus far.

As they know our critical needs, hopefully we'll know something soon.

  • Just had to bump this and I still can't understand why he isn't a dawg yet? Who cares if he's a DB. He is a play maker. You can never have to many of those.... Come on cmr let's give this young man the chance of a lifetime. Let's make him a dawg!!!

  • He's going to be in Athens Feb24 an 25 so my feeling is that he's offered that weekend... but have been told that with the Larry porter hire at ASU they are starting to show interest.

  • Move it or lose it. Could have already had him in the bag. Hopefully he leaves as a dawg
