Things are moving forward between UGA and uncommitted 2012 prospect Mario Alford. Check inside for the latest.

  • I hope he catches on at CB real fast! We are surely going to need the depth!

  • I love his attitude. You've got to love hearing guys like this that burn inside for the chance to be a Dawg. If he doesn't make it at corner surely they can use his speed somewhere. How much would the 2012 class go up in rank if he joins the class? Go Dawgs!

Kid seems to be real fluid. As you stated, if he doesn't make it at CB he can still be an asset in ST's. You have to have depth and having him added to the 12' class would be a big help.

  • I hate to see anyone who wants a UGA offer so badly not be awarded one if he can be found deserving. In Mario Alford's case it seems he will.

This is one player who I expect will give 110% effort every play, every day.

Just love to see players rewarded who WANT to be Dawgs!

Good luck to you, young man, and hopefully welcome to the Bulldog Nation!

  • He played QB in high school, RB in college and returned some kicks and oh yeah, he has Speed!!..... This kid is an athlete, give him a year to learn the defense and he will be a lockdown corner!

In the 247 team rankings), his signing would bring UGA up to 766.03 pts, good for 4th in front of Florida and Ohio St., assuming neither signs another player for the 2012 class.

  • I now sleep good @night i know our coaches are hard @work feels great, to know we almost, at the top of the mountain!!! He is going to make, a huge difference in our covering kick offs. Depth and speed game!! #GATA

  • I hope we offer b/c obviously we need the depth really bad and the kid really seems to want to be a Dawg. I think he could add in as a kickoff returner immediately which is great but based solely on his film I think Coach Lak is going to have his work cut out for him and have faith in him. Hopefully he shows what he can do in front of the coaches. I mean you can't teach speed but I think he is going to have to work on his shake, hips and change of direction to make it as a CB in the SEC. He may have it but a lot of this plays are based on straight line speed. I think when they put him through the paces showing he that is a very coachable kid will seal the deal because he will have a lot to learn. Throwing around "lockdown" seems very premature but adding him makes me feel better about being so thin. GATA Mario.

I don't downvote people but you probably got one due to the fact you make a huge assumption that all you need is speed, have QB and RB experience in high school, and one year in the system and you can become a lockdown corner.

To be honest, that's a completely foolish statement. I am hoping you know that there is MUCH more than that to be a lockdown corner.

We've had plenty of guys who had speed to burn (Bryan Evans) who couldn't play corner. Alford hasn't played much corner at all and yet you all want to take him immediately. That's cool but just remember you should bitch about him or the staff if he is sitting on the bench his career.

I honestly could care less who "wants" a UGA offer. We've had plenty of guys in recruiting history who have wanted one. Danny Carmichael comes to mind. Nice player. Decent LB. Grew up a UGA fan. People were bitching about the staff not offering him but failing to realize he couldn't play in the SEC. Now his name is used as a joke in terms of offering anyone just because they were fans.

If Grantham and Olivadotti think this kid can become a good corner and develop, then he will get an offer. If they don't, then I know he won't. They don't throw offers out like candy. They only offer guys they feel can play in their system and improve. And they have a VERY good history in figuring that out.

I agree 100% with you. Maybe my statement was taken out of context. By no means do I think he will walk in here and be Deion Sanders but at the same time I was pointing out the fact that he is very talented:

    1. He ran track in high school and was very successful
    2. He played QB in high school and was a good HS QB (more so for his rushing abilities than passing)
    3. He played RB in college after being a QB in high school
    4. 247 rated him as a 4 star prospect as an athlete an the # 9 JUCO kid overall

Now what do these 4 things mean in terms of him being a good CB in college? nothing.. but look at other kids that have played offense in high school and came to college as a DB and had successful careers, there are a lot of them. Hopefully Sheldon Dawson (played mainly offense in HS) will be successful at DB as well. I also agree with you in that he wont get an offer if our staff doesnt think he can play in the SEC, but if he does get an offer they obviously think he can, and so do I.

+ 1 for you for your honesty!

I understand the DownVote - sorta.

I hate to see anyone who wants a UGA offer so badly not be awarded one if he can be found deserving.

    This was my point:

"if he can be found deserving".

I didn't say give it to him just because he wants it; there is a difference.

If Coachs TG and KO determine he's worthy and offer him a scholarship, then that's great for him. If not, then he won't be offered one, and that's fine, too.

    Just say'in!

OK for the DownVote on my comment to jbarke11.

    You've made your point.

Somebody got mad at me when I commented that I had neutralized the DownVote given to jbarke11, so since you couldn't DownVote him again, I got the DownVote for my comment!

I get it, somebody didn't like what he said. I'll take your angry DownVote!

  • Well a great attitude is a great base to start the Coaching process, IMO half the battle is already won and throw great speed in and you have something to work with. I don't think any of us are thinking any of these recruits are coming in with SEC- form they all will take some molding and time to mature into their positions, also its better to have a warm body that could step in if someone goes down due to lack of depth from losing those other 2 CBs. Besides they probably wouldn't be looking at him so hard now if those guys hadn't had to leave, at least until next year anyway

Cut the guy some slack. Yes I agree that shutdown CB was the wrong description, He appears to be a very good looking prospect/athlete on tape with exceptional speed and versitilty on the offensive side of the ball. Hopefully converting successfully to a DB is in his future, but if not I'm sure special teams will be regardless!
