Alshon and Gilmore both leaving SC

  • redandblack

  • I want to laugh and celebrate as well, but we may have as many as five or six guys leaving in the next two weeks.......

Glad to see alshon go, gilmore wasn't never a concern to us anyways though. About the only thing he was good at was running people down. As far as coverage and playmaking, I hate to see him go. IMO

  • It's going to sound "homer", but neither are a big blow. Here's my reasoning:

Alshon - obviously didn't have near the production he did last year and it didn't go to someone else - we transformed our offense as the season went along to the zone/read/run. The double teams on Alshon didn't have much impact and teams stopped doubling him. We are deep at WR and frankly wouldn't hurt to get some more speed on the field.

Gilmore - I personally think he is overrated, and I'm not saying that cause he is leaving - I've been saying it since last year. I've seen him get beat enough times and miss tackles and be out of position more than someone projected to go in the 1st Round. I'm more concerned about depth at the position than losing his skills. All that said, it would be nice to have his SR leadership with the departure of Ingram and Robertson.

As of today, I think our Defense takes a step back, but our offense takes a step forward. Maybe not a wash, but I think both happen.

Alshon is big even though his production was down, he commanded attention from opposing defenses. When teams left him in man coverage they nearly always payed the price. He will be missed. Gilmore was solid but played out of position. He will never see the field in the nfl as a corner..... he is a safety in the league

It doesn't just sound homerish, it is homerish.

You guys will significantly miss both of those players next year. You don't replace a guy like Alshon or a career-long starter like Gilmore over night.

There's a long way until next season and who knows what'll happen, but losing top flight guys like that is always a big blow for any program.

  • Alshon leaving early is one of the most obvious college football news items off the past 6 months. Given his lack of production (due to QB-issues), and the change in the offensive identity with Shaw at QB, I would have been absolutely shocked if he returned.

He was as good as gone after South Carolina's loss vs Auburn.

  • Alshon was a bit overrated and I'm betting he gets lost in the shuffle of the NFL before too long.

That said, they would both improve the USCe team by staying.

Over rated? No. Overweight? Yes. If Alshon stays dedicated in the off season and treats the NFL like a job, he has the ability and physical gifts to be a very successful receiver in the NFL. If he decides that the all you can eat buffet is more important, than he'll be out of the league before his rookie contract expires.

  • It will hurt by losing Gilmore but we get Auguste back from a medical redshirt and he has a ton of experience.

Devin Taylor is the only one who is still up in the air. The general feeling is he is coming back, but you never know. All the other juniors have said they are coming back.

The only other potential losses are Kenny Miles (transfer to another school) or Bruce Ellington (basketball)

yeah was wondering about devin taylor as well. he was a beast in 2010, and might be again next year playing opposite clowney even though ingram is gone.

I'll take that bet, I'll also bet you he has a better NFL career that AJ Green

He will be a pretty good receiver in the NFL but no way is he on AJ's level IMO.

Now you have lost your god damned mind. AJ is already a Pro Bowler and he is just getting started.

See, this is why people say the things they do about Gamecock fans. Y'all are batshit crazy. Jeffrey isn't anywhere close to AJ Green's level. Alshon will be a good NFL receiver. AJ is a GREAT NFL receiver.

  • Congrats on making a ridiculous statement within an otherwise reasonable thread. Clearly, we will find out if this even comes close to happening, but my guess is that you will not find another sane evaluator of talent who will say the same thing.

Alshon may be very good, but he will not have the same impact of AJ. If the NFL and other talent evaluators thought he would be an All Pro, he would be a projected top 10 pick.

  • I think Alshon is in the mold of a Plaxico Burress. Alshon is very strong and has extremely good hands and will be a target in the redzone. I think he will have a successfull pro career and could go to a couple of pro bowls. Right now, I dont not think he is at the caliber of AJ Green. He made the pro bowl as a rookie with a rookie QB who at times struggled. That is quite a feat. I am a Gamecock homer but I cant deny how good Green is. Would I love for Jeffrey to be like Green next year. Yes, but right now, I dont believe he has the speed to do that.

Good points Finny, I think that top end speed is the only real hit against Jeffrey. He is not nearly as fast as Plaxico when he first came into the league. Nbiggrinow that he has shot himself in the leg and spent over a year in jail, who knows.......................................
