Smith has a career head coaching record of 132–86. (.606). he has coached at utah, michigan, idaho, weber state, louisville and arky! Either ARKY is getting desperate, or they just hired him for the time being, or they may think he has a chance to be great, but dang gum this guy has'nt stayed in one place to long! Coincidence?

The guy was Petrino's mentor (I believe).
Petrino was an assistant for a long time under Smith.
Good hire, imo. He allows them to keep some continuity in their system with all the talent that they have built up for the 2012 season.

This has bad move written all over it. Not because Smith is a bad coach, but because it's interim. It makes it apper that Arkansas has no plan, no vision, no idea of what to do.
What player could be happy with this? It undermines the coach before he ever gets there, both with players and other coaches. How can you possibly recruit? You can't make any promise because you won't be there to keep them.
It also keeps the Petrino thing front and center for every game and network broadcast, as the interim tag begs for the lead right into the very story you want to go away.
Very poor management from the AD. If I was an Arkansas fan, I'd be livid.
