Aschoff on UGA's X Factors

He claims David Andrews on the OL.
And Cornelius Washington on the DL.

Either pick is fair enough, although I have to contest some of his supporting argument.
He claims Burnette moving to C from RG would create havoc on the offensive line.
But maybe someone can tell me of a different situation on any team... the next guy to step in on the offensive line (the 6th lineman if you will) is usually stepping into the RG spot. In 2010, we ran Kenarious Gates out there at RG. When Sturdivent came back to LT, we moved Boling in at RG. In 2011, we kept throwing our next guy in at RG.

Losing a RG to the Center position would usually just mean that the 6th man gets activated to that vacated position. And there isn't a big need to jostle things (as opposed to losing a Left Tackle who is usually considered the top lineman on the team and everyone in line might get bumped up a spot).

And Aschoff makes some comments about lack of production from our Defensive Ends in pass rush. We actually had the same number of sacks from our DEs as Bama.

And I don't know who (other than ESPN) is looking for big stat production from downlinemen in a 3-4 set. Especially when we take so many snaps in nickel and only feature two true down linemen anyway. The reality of the situation is that we had 25.5 sacks from the linebacker spot (which is where you should look for stats in a 3-4 defense). Not many teams in college football had more from their linebackers.

  • Not a very thoughtful analysis. Just like the Athlons All SEC team.

  • Don't expect Low or Aschoff to do any actual research. They just pull stuff out of their collective asses and post it as fact.

  • Aschoff is a gator, and thus he is by default, a dumbass.

  • I have come to like Ed (not as much as Chris, but Ed does well).

Their problem is that they are supposed to be experts on 12 teams.
I don't expect them to know everything about the Dawgs.

My 2 bones with his analysis isn't so much directed at UGA as it is with basic football.
3-4 defenses don't rack up stats on the D-Line. Expecially when they only field 2 DL in the nickel look which is used against all of these spread formations.

And that the RG is probably the first position filled anytime someone is bumped into the starting rotation (contesting Ed's statement that Burnette moving to Center would create chaos among the starters on the OL).
Maybe I've been a Dawg fan for too long, but it seems like we put our weakest cog on the OL at RG more often than not. It's the safest place to hide him, it seems.

When your whole job is based on following 12 teams you should know a lot more than they do.

Agree completely. I don't hate Chris or Ed. I don't expect them to be able to break down every team. I go there for general articles and the lunchtime links mainly. But like you said, I am not expecting linemen in a 3-4 to have great stats. Neither should Ed. It just exposes a lack of understanding of a defensive scheme.
