I believe Augusta Ga is the second most populated city in the state. The whole CSRA area is quite large. Much of it being in South Carolina. One would think there would be a lot of talented football players in the area.
Yet we appear to have the worst high school football in the state. Considering the amount of D-1 talent that comes out of the state of Ga it is amazing how little comes out of the Augusta area.
Their doesn't appear to be one consistent program in the actual city of Augusta. Richmond County. Josey had a good team in the late 90's. Thats all I can remember.
I am from Columbia County. Suprisngly not a single decent program their either. I grew up with some amazing athletes. Most of them either never played football, or played baseball instead.
The best high school football programs in the area would appear to be Lincoln County, and Thomson. Which are not very close to Augusta. Still not a lot of D-1 talent out of those programs annually either. Thomson has had a couple of really good players in the last couple of seasons in John Atkins, and Jordan Davis. I saw Branden Barden play for Lincoln County a few years ago. I believe he's in the NFL now. I can't recall too many other high profile players from the area lately. Sanders Commings went to Westside. Which is actually in the city of Augusta. Right down the road from the Masters actually. I know their has to be more but that's all that comes to mind right now as far as recent players.
I have my own opinions on this but what does everyone else think? Why is it that the almost none of the Augusta area high school programs are on par with the rest of the state? Considering the amount of kids that live in the Augusta area you know their is a lot of talent. I have seen many great athletes in this area that never even played a sport. The best athletes in my school never even played sports. What is so different about this part of Georgia?
I would love to live in a part of Ga where I didn't have to drive over an hour just to see a decent high school game. Most of the programs here are a joke in comparison to many others in the state. The atmosphere at a high school game in this area is nothing compared to the high intensity atmosphere in most other areas in the state.
I grew up in 1-AAAA at Coffee High playing against the likes of Valdosta and Lowndes year after year. Now me and my family live in Columbia County and I have to say the football around here doesn't add up to what I'm used to. My wife teaches at North Augusta high and the yellow jackets are a pretty good team year in and year out. They haven't produced a D1 talent since CJ Byrd I think but they have made top 4 in SC playoffs the last 2 years IIRC. I watched eat Evans pretty handily last year. Vinny Miller won CSRA player of the year and was a monster but he graduated.I know it's across the river but they field a good team year after year.
Westside is doing our part with Commings!
