  • Do you like the 3-4 defense against the option attack?

If you are the DC, what is your gameplan: X's and O's?

    meansonny

  • We played the 3-4 more like a 5-2 last year with both OLB setting the edge, and I thought it was pretty effective.

    I don't like it.

We had both our DEs and OLBs lined up outside the tackles trying to pinch everything in and provide contain at the same time.

The fits just aren't there against the option attack.
It's one of the vulnerabilities of the 3-4.

We held them to 82 yards in the 2nd half last year. Tevin made some dumb throws though. I look for this game to be an all out war. We must cave the middle of the line and take the fullback away.

Lee looks comfortable throwing the ball if he can roll out and connect on some passes and also break contain and run they can score on us.

They cannot stop us at all if we execute

    49-28 us

Art Schlichter's cellmates and Mo Clarett's rugby team believe Ohio State always does things honestly.....

I believe we should go more nickel and get the extra DL in there. Our back 7 is fast and physical enough to know what to do and get there to do it. Since our Safeties play close to around 220 thats almost big enough to be LB size so I think Nickel would work.

  • reviewing the second half, it looked like our defense played very well, forcing tech into some 2nd/3rd and longs and passing situations.

obviously the one drive where we intercepted the first play hurt them, so yes you could argue they should have run there.

still think our dline guys played pretty well overall, particularly abry jones and john jenkins.

Johnson was a fool to pass attempt on so many first downs.
He did it at least 6 times during the game.

The jackets averaged almost 6.2 yards per rush attempt in the 1st quarter.
But because they started a couple of first downs with passes, they netted 0 points.

They averaged 5.3 yards per attempt in the second quarter.
They actually drove the field for 70 yards on 14 straight rush attempts for a TD.

About 30% of their rushes went for 6+ yards against our defense.
About 20% of their rushes were for 10+ yards.
My point is that they don't need to pass on 2nd and 10, even.

I hope we shut them out in 2 weeks. However, I would not be surprised if our run defense struggles to continuously get off the field if Johnson is disciplined to run the football and to play ahead of the chains for 4 downs.

  • My beef with the 3-4 against this offense is the gap control.

If we play our assignments, then we will give up 3-4 yards per rush and continually find them driving down the field.
The only way to win the gap war is to cheat (ie. run blitz a gap or anticipate a play, which could bite us with the incorrect play-call for 7) or to have our front 7 manhandle their assignment across the field to stuff the play. We might have the personnel to continuously blow up GT. But you're asking the DL to play superman against the opponent. And practically speaking, that's so much easier said than done. Even against GT.

  • I think Jordan Jenkins is going to have a huge game agaist tech.

I hope so. Justin Houston never got it, in my opinion. He tried to feather the play and found himself caught in no man's land time and time again (I had been told that he was coached that way). Jordan definitely has the athleticism. But the option can play games with a defender.

I actually like the inside out approach to stopping the option. Play hard and fast inside and force the ballhandler to speed up the decision-making process. The quicker he pitches the ball, the quicker the play isn't an option anymore and the rest of the defense can swarm to the ball-carrier.

  • Just get out in front early on points and the game will take care of it's self.

Where teams get killed defending the option is getting "gutted" up the middle on the first read. It wouldn't surprise me to see 6 guys on the line at times (with Jarvis and Jordan walking up on the outside). The FB is the leading rusher in that offense. Clog the middle and it makes it a 2 man game versus a 3 man game. Our ILBs must stay home and play extremely disciplined these next 2 weeks. Jarvis, Jordan, and Shawn Williams should have monster games if we can stop the middle.

Erk's old 6-2 Defense worked well against the option..

I agree. We can't afford to have turnovers, but as long as we don't turn it over we should score a ton of points. I think we can run on them all night, which should help with keeping the D fresh. I expect Tech to move and score, but hopefully we will put them in enough 4th and 3-4 yards that we stop a few of those. They have NOTHING to lose this game. They can afford to do the low probability thing (which Johnson always does regardless) because they are going to get beat for certain otherwise. They will pull out all stops for this game.

I agree 100% that it starts up the middle.

And I agree that priority against the option is opposite to most defensive philosophies (most philosophies funnel plays back to the inside).

I believe in speeding up the tempo and forcing the offense to spread the ball wide much quicker than they want to.
Force the quick decision. Force the quick pitch. If your man is the pitchman, don't wait for the pitch... knock him on his can as soon as you can.

The more the offense has to handle the ball, the more likely they are to make a bad pitch. The faster the tempo, the more likely someone isn't ready on the offense.

And the quicker the qb makes the pitch, the quicker it isn't an option play anymore (no more options, and the defense can react to 1 ballcarrier.) Lastly, if the defense is fast enough, your 12th defender is the sideline.

3-4 is at a disadvantage IMHO..... DL------Washington, Geathers, Jenkins, Smith................LB's Jenkins, Tree, Jones...........same secondary, but when there are 2 reciever sets have Shawn Williams playing close to line and have Rambo playing like a center feilder. man coverage on the receivers
