According to UGA ...
Freshman defensive lineman John Atkins, a 6-4, 322-pound native of Thomson, Ga., was on his way to the Georgia Driver’s License/State Patrol office in Thomson Friday for a 4:30 p.m. appointment to take care of an issue with his license. He was meeting his mother there who needed to give him his birth certificate and social security card.
He was pulled over by the UGA Police Department for a seat belt violation and during a routine check, it was revealed he had an improper license. This was the very same license issue that he was going to get resolved at his 4:30 p.m. appointment.
Statement from Georgia Coach Mark Richt Regarding John Atkins
“I am aware of the situation involving John Atkins, and the discipline will be handled internally. It will not involve any playing time.”

I am sorry but this is crap the AJC has pulled yet again. UGa police should have always been power hungry and not give students a break, especially student athletes.
dumb move on his part but thats all this is. GO DAWGS!
Who cares? Jesus.
"If you're not having fun, you're doing something wrong."
Does Athens cops have nothing to do except destroy our football team I was pulled over for the same reason going to get my renewal - the cop just smile and let me go.. No wonder so many high school recruits are leaving georgia.. They are afraid of all the crap strictness and discipline they hear about in Athens.

"....All I ask is that he be loyal to Georgia, proud of that jersey, and try like the devil to win." --- Wally Butts
Though this is minor in the eyes of the law, this is also a problem that should have never happened on his part to begin with.
Dumb and Dumber IMO.
DUMB-the cop who actually gave him a ticket considering he was on his way. I had a suspended license years ago and was sent on my way more than once with no ticket or anything.
DUMBER-You know you don't have a license, put your seatbelt on.
when your as big as he is. i can understand why he wouldn't wear it
He can do that when he does have a license and just pay the ticket. When you don't have a license, you don't ask to be pulled over by not wearing your seatbelt.
I agree with davidson. Kids need to be smarter about things.
