Greg McGarity today is going to introduce a new initiative regarding brand marketing for UGA sports teams. It will involve some subtle changes to the fonts and numbers used to make more consistent among different sports, including football. McGarity's PC is set for 12:30 after Mark Richt.
The Banner-Herald's Marc Weiszer has tweeted out a pic of how the new football jersey will look ...
A little different setup for today's press conference, as Richt (and McGarity) are both going in the multi-purpose room rather than the team meeting room (where Richt's press conferences usually are during season).
Richt is up now ...
Richt on two practices after G-Day ...
"We won't do any tackling or anything after G-Day. G-Day will be the last day of tackling. ... Then after that, our coaches will be jumping on the road recruiting."
Richt says G-Day teams will be split as follows ...
1 offense/2 defense
2 offense/1 defense
"We'll split our coaching staffs up," putting Grantham in charge of one and Bobo in charge of another
"The goal is to try to make the teams as even as possible."
Richt says Grantham and Bobo will have a coin toss Thursday and the winner will get to pick the team he wants.
The goal for this to put the 1s against the 1s and the 2s against the 2s throughout the game.
"Which makes for a pretty even ballgame," Richt says. "We always try to put our best on the best,"
There will be 12 minute quarters with no time out for kicks.
No kickoffs. Balls will be set on 25
Do we really expect Grantham to pick the 2nd team defense?
Or Bobo to pick the 2nd team offense?
Richt asked about Theus at LT ...
"Well, we've rotated a bunch. We're experimenting right now, because a guy like Xzavier Ward, he's really coming along. We might give him some shots at right tackle. ...
(confirming yesterday's DawgTreats)
"We're trying to find who our best five is for next year, so we're rolling them around a little bit more."
Mark Fox is in the house for this, I just noticed ...
Probably has to do with the brand identity presentation ...
Richt on Amarlo Herrera ...
"We're looking for leadership, and Amarlo is trying to provide that ... Not only do you have to get everybody lined up, but you have to do your job and do it well. I like what I'm seeing in regards to that, but he's still got a ways to go to be a dominant football player."
Richt says spring has "run very smooth" ...
"When you have your coordinators come back and the majority of your staff come back, it's a lot easier just to roll into spring ball."
He noted a lot of teams with new coaches pushed spring back.
"We were able to get started relatively early. That's just a sign of having the continuity that we've had."
Richt with praise for Damian Swann ...
"I think Swann is leading extremely well for us. I think he's practicing hard. He's to the point in his career where he's got to think in terms of trying to perfect his trade. He's not learning what to do anymore. ... Now it's just a matter of 'Can I lead and can I become the very best I can possibly be.' I think that's his mindset. I'm seeing good signs of that."
Richt on Tray Matthews ...
"It's been impressive. I'm not going to sit here and try to say it's been anything other than impressive. I don't know if he's assignment-wise doing everything correct, but he's a very good fundamental football player ... When a guy plays as hard as he does and can tackle out in space ... for a mid-year guy, it's been impressive.
Richt is clear that Tray hasn't "locked anything down."
"Nothing is etched in stone, but he's made an impression on everybody."
Richt says of JJ Green, "We'd definitely like to see what he can do as a return man."
Richt correcting something I didn't know ...
They do work special teams in spring, but a lot of it is "an evaluation of personnel" and fundamental work in blocking, etc ...
"Then when the season rolls around there's a lot more gameplanning."
Richt asked about the transition for UGA president from Michael Adams to Jere Morehead ...
"The relationship I've had with President Adams has been very good. "
He says they met once a year.
"Mostly it was just good conversations about being pleased with how things were going, and if there were some things that needed to be handled, we would handle them."
Morehead is a former faculty rep for football so "I got to know him on a more personal level," Richt said.
"There's a comfort level there for me, and I can't imagine it not continuing to be a good relationship."
McGarity's presentation beginning now ...
"This is not a rebranding process regarding the 'G.' Everything we're talking about, we're touching the 'G.'" ... "But we did feel like we needed to provide more consistency in our program for all of the sports."
McGarity said different sports used different fonts, etc ...
"This helped us simplify and clearly define our brand."
UGA one of four schools to work with Nike on this
McGarity: "We're not taking anything away. We're simply adding to what we already had in our tool chest."
Uniform changes will be implemented for football at G-Day game.
