2012 RB Matt Jones names Dawgs on top

  • Justin Hopkins

Huge early news on his recruitment. Kid's solid.

Top 2012 recruit Matt Jones is already a top name on most recruiting boards. At 6-foot-2, 210-pounds the star running back has already attracted verbal offers from top schools in the Southeast and even beyond. Jones prepares for his first taste of action this Friday as Armwood high (FL) prepares for a jamboree this Friday. Although recruiting has taken a bit of a back seat, Jones mentioned he has his eye on one Southeast school early.

"I'm healthy, and I'm feeling good right now," stated Jones. " Getting ready to play this Friday in a jamboree and I'm pretty excited."

Over the summer Jones had the chance to visit Notre Dame, Friday Night Lights at Florida, and Dawg Night at Georgia.

"I went to Notre Dame for a one day camp," said Jones. "I did really well there. I also went to Friday Night Lights at Florida and Dawg Night at Georgia. I did really well at both camps. I have over 15 verbal offers right now. But really Georgia is on top right now for me. It's still early and anything can change. But Georgia, Florida, and Miami are coming real hard for me right now."

Some of the schools to verbally offer Jones include: Miami, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, USC, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Florida State, and Auburn. Jones claims every school is recruiting him to play running back.

Watching film on Jones, you can see that his blend of power and speed is top notch. As a running back he has great balance and shows good burst through the hole for a bigger back. He also displays great lateral movement along the line, while being patient for his blockers to set up the lane.

According to Jones, academics will play a major role in his college decision. "I'm looking for a school that is focused on academics. A team that runs the ball, and an opportunity to play as a freshman. Also my relationship with the coaches will be an important part of my decision."

  • Great news Justin!! Matt is an exceptional back. Any idea of how the potential commitment of Crowell would affect Jones?

  • Hopefully Crowell coming to Georgia would not have an impact. By the time Jones gets on campus King will be gone and Ealey will be a senior if not gone to the NFL. Although Crowell will only be one class ahead of him our overall depth chart at running back should be quite appealing at that point.

  • WOW!!! I heard we lead for Jones and this was the first video clip I have seen of him. All I have to say is "WOW". Hope we land Crowell and Jones. Best tandem in the country. No question about it.

  • I've seen Jones multiple times this spring and summer and he's the real deal physically. UGA jumped in on him very early and got the edge.

He measured 6-2.5, 220 pounds at the Bradenton Under Armour Combine in March. He showed excellent footwork and caught the ball well in passing drills. Also ran the 40 on a cold day in the 4.6 range, so he's got some wheels.

    I've attached a mugshot below.
