According to Deadspin it is:
Notre Dameo learned first of the death of his grandmother, Annette Santiago, and then of the death of his girlfriend, Lennay Kekua.
... And there is also this:
Yesterday, Brian Te
This is crazy! If true, maybe the biggest, non cheating, sports hoax ever?
If this is really a hoax that's pretty sad and sickening.
Just another reason why he shouldn't have gotten all the awards other than he isn't even close to the best LB in the country.
"HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS"
Statement from Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown:
"On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators."
Hahahaha, what a load of BS!
How do you have a "girlfriend" if you never meet her in person. ND and his parents are just trying to cover everybodies asses.
Does Notre Dame really think people are dumb enough to believe this?
never seen Catfish? It's certainly possible. You may be right about Notre Dame and his family but it's certainly possible to have a "girlfriend" via the internet.
I've seen it. But this is an all american football player at ND. Not some fat, ugly, desperate for attention person (ie a tech grad).
Also the story told is that he met her in Hawaii and at Stanford. Obviously not true if she doesn't even exist.

Espn and sports illustrated did not even check the story out before writing the story! I am suprised at them........NOT!
Nice work Manti !
-- Lance Armstrong
Teo has issued a statement. It is in the article on ESPN below.
Notre Dame says a story about Manti Te'o's girlfriend dying, which he said inspired him to play better as he helped the Fighting Irish get to the BCS title game, turned out to be a hoax apparently perpetrated against the linebacker.
Yeah, but the difference here is that the perpetrator of this fraud (other than Teo) is a guy name Tuisosopo whom Teo knew, exchanged friendly messages on twitter (as opposed to a stranger as in Catfish). I actually hope that he was involved to see how ND spins it now that they have publicly backed the overrated linebacker.
This is disgusting on so many levels. Worse than lance Armstrong.
I agree that it is total BS. Why would Teo not check someone out before dedicating all that time into a relationship? That dude could have any girl at ND and he chose to have a long distance phone relationship with a girl that he only met one time? Total BS. Teo is in on this and so are his parents. This story helped win the votes for the awards that he won and I bet they thought it would help him win the H. I think they should strip him of several of the awards and give them to Jarvis Jones ASAP! This is total crap.
He and the fam have been quoted multiple times as to them meeting in person, so their statement along with ND's is absolute horse poo
Best thing for Teo to do is to come out and say that guy is his boyfriend.
