Great post and spot on!
This is the worst part of the 24/7 news cycle and over analysis...The talking heads get on TV and spew the same tired cliches and fans start buying the hype without truly researching and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of a team.
The biggest downfall fan bases have is ACTUALLY BELIEVING that last season has any type of carryover into the current season. We have a top 5 defense in 2011 and return 9 starters therefore we will have a top 5 defense in 2012. NO! It does not work that way and it's why they play the games. Same thing with 2008. Yes we had great talent at the skill positions and finished 2007 as one of the best (if not the best team in the country), but people ignored the flaws and assumed that naturally the success from the previous year would carryover.
Sports does not work that way. Every year EVERY team has turnover. Fans need to realize that preseason hype is just that - HYPE- until the games are played. Yes, we were 5-0 prior to USCe, but all the warning signs were there that our defense was struggling (see Buffalo, FAU, Tennessee, Missouri). Are we really surprised USCe took advantage of our faults which have been evident from game 1?
