I looked this up midway through the game yesterday...
Willie Martinez '05 - '07: 6 games surrendering 30+ points, gave up 200+ rushing yards in 2 of those 6 games
Todd Grantham '10- '12: 13 games surrendering 30+ points, gave up 200+ rushing yards in 9 of those 13 games
Grantham has been outperformed by Martinez in his first 3 seasons, and the primary factor is that his defense cannot stop the run. Alabama has led the SEC and country in rushing defense in 3 of the past 4 seasons, those happen to be the 3 where they were in the MNC game.
Until we get the rushing defense fixed, we can't reasonably expect to compete for titles on a yearly basis. Murray, Gurley and company are the only reason we're even in contention right now.

Maybe but Georgia's win loss record is better and the turnover ration is much better for TG's defense. Which would you rather have a worse Won Loss record or CTG! My choice is the better W&L and CTG! Better question is, What's your point in these post. Are you trolling to just stir things up!
From '05 - '07 we went 30-9 with a SEC championship and a 2-1 bowl record.
From '10 - '12 we went 28-13 with no SEC championship and a 1-2 bowl record.
The point is not to stir up the pot (and you would know that's not my style if you had ever seen another post of mine), but to show that Gratham's "success" and ability is not what many in our fanbase (including myself) believed it to be. He's an excellent recruiter, but there's absolutely no excuse for giving up 200+ rushing yards and 30+ points on such a consistent basis with 7-9 NFL players on his unit. Whether he needs to seek consultation in the offseason or make adjustments on his own, something needs to be done in order to get the defense on a championship level.
I believe Grantham is a bit overrated. We have not seen our defense consistently shut people down like great defenses do. He has been a very good recruiter. And while your point regarding statistical comparisons between Grantham and Willie have some validity, CTG far surpasses WM when it comes to in-game adjustments. But at times he tries to outthink the room, which in turn causes too many plays where guys are out of position. Of course the plus side to that is the increase in turnovers. Also, the tackling is far better than what we saw under WM. And I would say the biggest improvement over WM is attitude and aggression. Overall, CTG is an improvement over WM, but there is still a long way to go before we see a consistently dominant defense. And that is what I want to see. A defense that consistently ranks in the top 3 in the SEC every year.
I agree this years defense was hard to understand. Talent vs. results. The run defense must improve...but please.
The team is improving- 6-7, 10-4, 12-2, ?. 14-0?
CTG is part of that success!
We need a big time hire at the DL position! Improve there, and we will see better run defense.
I agree with this post. If UGA could have proved it could stop the run they would be playing in Miami. I don't think the 3-4 is ideal for stopping the run up the gut because UGA constantly gets gashed up the middle. I would offer advise but I am no football coach but the defense with that amount of talent is unacceptable and should be to all UGA fans. I also would never like to see 8-9 future NFLer's on the same unit. I look at Stanford and see smart and disciplined football even though they lack the star power. Depth also needs to be shored up as well. Can't afford high amounts of attrition year in and year out. We need quality players on and off the field who are going to come in and represent the university proudly.
Saying that Martinez is better than Grantham is an absolute joke.
I could care less what the stats say.
Martinez inherited a stocked cupboard and screwed it up and got fired
Grantham inherited his mess, changed the scheme and started from scratch in recruiting.
There is no comparison. There is only 1 statement to make
Martinez couldn't carry Grantham's jock strap in any area including coaching, teaching or recruiting
Art Schlichter's cellmates and Mo Clarett's rugby team believe Ohio State always does things honestly.....
I think you need a lesson in reading comprehension. Nowhere did I say that Martinez is a better DC than Grantham - however, his unit outperformed Grantham's in his first 3 seasons, there's no debating it. Wins vs. losses, points allowed, whatever you want to look at.
