I read it correctly. You are picking out 3 years of a 6 year tenure. You are discounting what he inherited. HE SHOULD have had better results those 3 years. You are ignoring the clear dropoff year after year after he inherited a defense that in 2004 set the school record for fewest points allowed. That same group minus DP and a couple of others proceeded to give up 35 points to WV in the 1st half of the Sugar Bowl. That was a sign of things to come. Recruiting dropped off. The kids were not being taught the game.
I am not totally happy with Grantham. But, you judge a defense as part of a team. Creating turnovers and limiting points and getting 3 and outs. Martinez, by the end of his tenure was a joke in all 3 categories. We got embarrassed by multiple opponents.
You put Martinez in right now over the past 3 years and we never sniff Atlanta and we sure aren't 2-0 against Muschamp.
The whole stats thing is blown way out of proportion. There are other factors to be examined. I don't need stats to tell me who the better coach is. I don't need stats to tell me that Martinez destroyed what we had.
Art Schlichter's cellmates and Mo Clarett's rugby team believe Ohio State always does things honestly.....
Again, you're entirely missing the point. The original post was not meant to pump up Martinez, but show simply that Grantham is not what everyone cracks him up to be. Saban, Muschamp, Chavis, Meyer, etc. were all able bring a defense that within 3 years of implementation was championship caliber - that's not what Grantham has accomplished. Martinez' production is simply used as a reference point, a point that shows our defensive results and as a result wins and losses, are no better than what we had in '05 - '07, in spite of having a better overall offense in 2 of 3 years.
Dude, you might not have meant to pump up Martinez, but you did. You labeled the thread Grantham vs Martinez debate. How could you expect us to view it any other way?
I will never agree with you on anything positive about Willie Martinez. He inherited a great defense and destroyed it and almost got his college roommate fired.
Martinez was succesful because of the talent of recruits Van Gorder left behind, I like Grantham and think he is alright, but I don't think he is in elite status either, but I am not going to bash him because he has had to come in a patchwork the defense together moving to the 3-4, then our defense showed good in the second year, but regressed alittle this year due to suspensions and guys not gelling...........my point is this I think he is a pretty good coach, but I can't say he is elite, because I can not stand to see people gut us in the running game, but he does seem to be able to rally the guys and get stops when needed most, another thing we havent been blessed with quality depth like Bama or LSU. I wonder too if the guys we had this year, outside of Jarvis, was worried too much about making the highlight reel to maintain assignments, not bashing the kids either. I am on the record saying this is one of the hardest groups to let go of in a long long time but there are alot of variables to take into consideration, I have said it for 3 years though we have trouble stopping power running teams, don't know if it is the scheme, not playing the gaps correctly, if it's the fact we lack adequate depht @ the Dline, or if Grantham just can't figure out how to not to get gashed.......all I am saying is give the man a break and lets see how the defense looks next year..........hey I know we are losing alot of starters but so did Bama this year, and LSU.........guys on scholorship now have been put through the paces reguarding the 3-4, only people that arent are this years class, know there is gonna be a learning curve for new starters but if Grantham is half as good as everyone claims we should have a decent defense that can keep us in the game, because guys our Offense is str8 nasty and I believe it will be almost as good even if Murray goes pro, Hutson has been biding his time and he looked good last year when he got to play. Next year maybe be like when Shockley got us a SEC championship, no one expected it but it happened.
