Since recruiting services started rating kids? Stafford, AJ, Lumpkin, Crowell? I am sure if there had been recruting services 30+ years ago Herschel would have been the unanimous #1.

Should have been Tunsil. Outside of that? Stafford or Crowell I think.
Richt era only ...
With the help of the 247Composite rankings, we take a long look back at the top-rated recruits by position of the Mark Richt era at Georgia heading into another Signing Day.

Aaron Murray was going to be the number one recruit in the nation on ESPN before he got hurt. He was going to be number one over Russell Shepard and Matt Barkley.
Wow, I never knew that. Sheppard never panned out, and Barkley never lived up to the hype. I guess Murray wins here.
Thanks G. Wow, most of these have been very recent. When did recruiting services start rating kids? I know for Rivals it was 2002.
There were recruiting services way back...Dawgs were the first team to sign the #1 running back-Herschel and number 1 Offensive lineman-Winford Hood in 1979 in the same year.
Recruiting is an inexact science, but has become more accurate with all the camps and combines...This forum is blessed to have Rusty's input as he runs some of these events.
I agree it is more accurate nowadays. It helps that recruiting services are so intertwined with the teams recruiting them and the camps. It is no coincidence that when teams like UGA offer a guy that isn't ranked, the prospect becomes a 3/4/5 star. Also, when a kid gets rave reviews by sites like Dawgs247 at camps, schools like UGA start offering.
Just saw Richt speak in Macon about a week ago and he said point blank that him and his wife read all these sites (he also watches the coaching hot seat sites which was funny.) He said his wife actually posts on most sites. Goes to show you the respect guys like Rusty are given.
Great post. And you know I love the girl in your sig.(3rd pic) Please tell me her name again.
Michelle Keegan. She has no idea I could give her the best 30 seconds of her life.

Probably Andre Hastings...he was widely regarded as the number #1 recruit in the country in 1990. He was definitely the most hyped one that I can remember in the last 25 yrs. Here is a good article from SI on his recruitment.
From the article.........
Hastings's self-confidence often slips over into arrogance. Not only did he tell all suitors that he required jersey number 1 (no problem for Michigan, UCLA and Georgia), but also that he must have a room with a private bath, that he must be able to spat his shoes (wrap tape over all but the toes and heels) and wear towels tucked in his belt, that he must wear a particular kind of air-cushioned helmet, that it must have a running back-style face mask with two vertical bars instead of the typical receiver-style mask with only one such bar, that he gets to wear whatever brand of shoes and style of thigh pads he wants. But Hastings is not crazy. "Right now, I'm in the driver's seat," he says. "They have to be nice to me, so now's the time to ask. Once I get there, I'll be a nobody, and they won't have to do anything for me. And they won't. Besides, if I turn out to be as good as I plan to be, all this will be worth it to the school. I don't think I'm overrated."
Schoolboy star Andre Hastings ignored Sig

Dawgs on Top!
I remember reading somewhere that Hines Ward was regarded as the number one player in the nation when we landed him. Anyone know if this is true?
I have heard this much. Hines was amazing. Didn't he have the Ga QB bowl record for yards and td's until Murray broke it? WR too, just an amazing player.
He was highly rated-Maybe #1 in Georgia, but he was a QB..Everyone was recruiting him as an athlete..I remember his debut in Columbia,SC as a TB..he entered the game late in the fourth quarter when we needed a drive to win the game..He was quick and explosive..
Helped make a few first downs and salt the game away..
I believe he still holds the Bowl record with 413 yards passing vs. Virginia in 95 Peach.
looking back now at that 09 class aaron murray should of been the number one qb in the nation. i believe he was behind matt barkley, and garrett gilbert. i remember murray dominated the elite 11. overall mvp. i guess his knee injuy caused him to drop some.
actually looking back murray should of been a top 5-10 player in the entire nation.atleast. production wise he might have the best college career out of anybody in that class. others were, and will be taken higher in the draft cause of murrays height.
murray is just an amazing qb. dominated the state of florida. best qb at every camp he went to. was even the best college qb at last years elite 11. tough as nails, and has a great work ethic. will break every uga, and sec passing record.
couple of inches taller and i think we are talking number one overall pick type qb here. i think he will succeed in the nfl. we got something special here with aaron murray. 5th year qb. 4 year starter. we better enjoy him while we got him. qbs like murray dont come arounf often. imo he's possibly the most underappreciated player we have had at uga in recent memory.
Luginbill said point blank that Murray was going to be the number one player in the nation on recruiting insider if he didn't get hurt, but here are a few articles before Murray got injured....
Tom Luginbill previews the five prospects battling for the No. 1 spot in the 2009 ESPN 150.
After a more in-depth look than ever before, the ESPNU 150 is led by a trio with big-time arms, writes Tom Luginbill.
