After already receiving his undergraduate degree, quarterback Aaron Murray will begin work on two post-graduate degrees while leading Georgia's offense this season.

  • This was great to hear:

“I wanted to graduate early,” Murray said. “I don’t think I’m going to be Dr. Murray in two years by the time I leave. But hopefully I’ll have my Masters done and then take classes whenever I can to finish it up. … I probably won’t finish in two seasons, but my teachers are going to be working with me to figure out a schedule where if I don’t make it to the NFL, I’ll continue. If I’m blessed to be able to play in the NFL, then I’ll be able to take a class in the offseason and finish that up.”

I have had no reason to believe so but I have been thinking that Murray was going to leave after the 2012 season. Considering his size that will not change I dont think it would be a good idea for Murray to leave early. When Murray does decide to go to the NFL I think he will have a nice career. Some dont think much of him as an NFL prospect. I think he is gonna suprise a lot of people. He also might end up being a higher draft pick than some think right now.

Considering the amount of defensive talent we will lose after the 2012 season it would be huge if Murray returned for 2013. It looks like 2012 will be the year we have a great experienced defense. With tons of 2013 Draft picks. 2013 might be the year we have a great, and experienced offense. Full of 2014 Draft picks. Our offense looks like it will be pretty good in 2012 too. In 2013 Murray will be a Senior. Crowell a junior. Marshall, and Gurley Sophomores. Mitchell, Conley, and Bennett Juniors. Lynch a senior. Rome a Sophomore. Gates, Lee, and Burnette Seniors.

If he returns I dont think he just breaks all time UGA passing records but all time SEC passing records. I think Murray is one of the more underappreciated players I have seen at UGA. Hes not underaprecciated by all of our fanbase but by much more than I would of thought.

Hopefully its Murray 2010-2013 - LeMay 2014-2015 - Ramsey 2016-2017. Assuming their are no injuries or transfers. I think this is the best case scenario for us. Who knows what can happen though. Mason, or Bauta might suprise some me.

  • I hope the "Dr." can diagnose defenses better to avoid any more pick 6s.

  • Murray is clearly a highly motivated and intelligent kid. His goal is to play in the NFL. So far, he has never failed to achieve any goal he set for himself in his very young life.

If he wants to play in the NFL he has to improve and he knows it. He will have to play "lights out" this year to change some minds about his prospects as a pro, especially if he wants to go into the draft next year.

I would not bet against it.

    Agreed.

It's risk reward. Without a running game to rely on, we sent Murray back there too many times in big moments. The results... As many passing TDs as some QBs have seen in 2 seasons. But the downside risks were there, too.

If we want Bama or LSU ball security from the QB position, we need to provide about 30+ rushing TDs to support Aaron (we only gave him 15, and 20% of those came from the QB position).

If you are stuck living through the air, we are going to suffer the consequences of going to the air too much against tough, tough defenses. It's why Arkansas has had their best offenses ever and are still stuck in a distant third place behind LSU and Bama continuously.

  • Murray lost the SEC championship for us when he failed to tackle the Honey Badger on the kick return for a touchdown.......? My point, there is plenty of blame to go around in all aspects of last year's season. Those 4th down TD passes in the UF game were unbelievable....talk about a pressure situation against our biggest rival. I will reserve my opinion until the end of this season when hopefully we can add a consistent ground game and not have to depend so much on the pass.

Great post. Actually, we were 3rd overall in rushing in Conference games. Not as bad as everyone makes it out to be considering 1&2 played for the crystal.

He does have to be better in big games. He has to cut down on the mistakes. I think we can all agree that the QB position makes the magazine covers and gets the most attention. But, he is a 4th year player and 3rd year starter. He has to step up. Our success in 2012 will be how well our OL gels and how well Aaron Murray protects the ball.

    http://www.secdigitalnetwork.com/Portals/3/SEC%20Website/football/SEC-Only.pdf

Good link. If you notice that we ran the ball more than any other team in conference play. But our yards per attempt was 6th. And our rushing TDs was tied for 8th.

That tells you that Bobo is "trying" everything he can to get the running game going. And he's trying everything he can to help Murray out. But we just weren't that good running the football. You can complain that Bobo called the run too much in situations where we couldn't get anything positive (ie. Michigan State where we had 17 tackles for a loss), but the reality of the situation is that fewer run attempts would mean more pressure on Murray. And we don't know if that equals more turnovers. Common sense tells us that his efficiency would go down, though.

Murray is becoming a third year starter.
Stafford threw for 3400 yards and 61% completion in his third year (+900 yards and + 6% completion percentage to his soph year).
Greene threw for 3300 yards and 60.3% completion in his third year (+400 yards and +3% completion percentage to his soph year).
I cannot imagine Murray putting up more yards and more TDs, but with Bobo and Richt as his coach I would not be surprised to see considerable statistical improvement in completion percentage, yards per attempt, and passer efficiency.

    Criticism of Murray is fair.
However if we win the SEC, who is really going to care about about our overall records in 2011 and 2010?
(have you heard Auburn fans complain about going 8-5 two out of the last 3 seasons? have you heard Bama fans complain that they went from preseason consensus #1 in 2010 to become a 3 loss team just like UGA in 2008 losing to the 2 best teams on their schedule and another to a 5 loss team?)

It is obvious to me that UGA has been building up for success over the next 2 seasons.
What happened the last 2 seasons is done. The best is ahead for Murray and the rest of the Bulldawg Nation.

  • Interesting to hear that Murray is looking into a two-year plan. I hope he stays and finishes his eligibility.

Some good and interesting analysis here and enjoyable reading. There have been hundreds if not thousands of books written on how to be successful at winning football games, but you could fit it on the back of a business card.

    Synopsis:
    1. Run the football on offense.
    2. Stop the run on defense.
    3. Don't turn the ball over.
    4. Play sound special teams.

Good analysis. The rushing TD number can be easily manipulated (see Tebow aka King of the 2 yard TD). Overrated stat in my opinion. You are dead right. 2010 and 2011 doesn't matter. One stat that we did lead in was Time of Possession. This is huge and if we lead the League again in Time of Possession, I can see us playing in December for a chance at the Title.

I'll agree to disagree with you regarding the rushing TD number. I think the 2 yard TD run is one of the most important things a great team can do (impose it's will on a defense on the ground when the defense knows that they are going to run).

I'll let you see where I'm going with this.
    2011 LSU (35 rushing TDs)
    2011 Alabama (34 rushing TDs)
    2010 Auburn (41 rushing TDs)
    2009 Alabama (31 rushing TDs)
    2009 Florida (30 rushing TDs)
    2008 Florida (42 rushing TDs)
    2008 Alabama (32 rushing TDs)
    2007 LSU (35 rushing TDs).

I think this stat is even more important to winning the SEC than defensive statistics (see Auburn in 2010 overcome their defensive issues with their ground game).
More often than not, your top 2 teams in the SEC are going to lead this category.

Give me a 2 yard TD run a few times every Saturday. That and a cloud of dust.

Great point. But in all fairness, there are 3 Heisman Trophy Winners and Trent Richardson included in those production numbers. We didn't have that guy last year. I think Isaiah Crowell can be a guy that will score 15 TDs this season and the other backs to pitch in 10. 30 rushing is a huge number but I'd like to see it for sure.

    You're exactly right. Great point.

I guess what I'm saying is that Murray is getting all of the attention. When the issue is really, "we need to improve the running game".

We had 32 rushing TDs back when we had an argument for the BCS National Championship Game (2007).

In my opinion, we are winning games now despite our flaws. And until we fix this, we will continue to do so.

Stockpiling RBs is a great step in the right direction. Sometimes you need a Moreno that can get positive yardage despite holes in the OL.

Yeah DP, you're right, but in all fairness, Murray is a better non-rushing QB than any of those teams had... except maybe 1. Point being, We may not have thirty rushing with our receiver corps. But I hope we are more successful running, regardless of actual TD #'s. Not disagreeing, just saying most of those teams were either run dominate offenses or had the one- two punch of a fleet footed quarterback( Tebow-Scam) We won't have as many rushing tds because we have the passing game in our arsenal. I'm hoping maybe like USC in the Bush days with the balance of both.

    Huntinfool

  • LSU is on that list twice without any Heisman winners or excessively running QBs.

    It can be done.
