Dream Team Defense Question

  • Who has the most "impactful" plays on defense from the dream team in 2012?
The biggest impact would obviously be Jenkins.
But who racks up the stats in 2012?

Key stats... Sacks, INTs, Tackles for a Loss, Fumbles Forced (maybe include Passes Defended)

There have been a few podcasts about the move that Malcolm Mitchell made to the defensive side of the ball. It got me wondering about how big his impact can possibly be this season. And then comparatively to Ray Drew who may see a larger role in the defense as well with some more packages that he can participate in.

Throw in the rest of the dream team (can Jenkins tally up the sacks and tackles for a loss against 2 SEC caliber blockers? Will Herrerra emerge as a future All SEC level LB this season? Can Ramik Wilson or Corey Moore be that type of player?)

Except for Jenkins, these are just kids (sophomores). But big John is the only one that can expect 2 opponents on him for almost every snap.

  • I like Armlo's attitude, he shows up to the football in a BAAAAAAD mood. Maybe not the biggest hitter, being an ILB I'm not certain if he gets as many chances to hit in space as a safety or corner but he's just as sure a tackler as guys like Jarvis and Tree. So I belive he has the tools to reach All SEC level, and he seems to have no trouble picking up the Grantham's D.

I think Corey Moore is more important than Herrera though, based on suspensions and the physical ability of who's gonna have to replace Rambo in those first four as it stands right now. I think we've all read the stories that say Connor Norman knows more of the playbook, but by most accounts Corey Moore is more physically capable of playing the position from competitive standpoint when you're talking about the SEC. I think how high his ceiling is, or can be, is based in large part on his ability to learn those plays.

But the wild card is Malcom Mitchell right, I'm really pumped to see what kind of corner he can be. I've even read and heard that he's a better corner than he is a receiver so that definitely has caught my attention, I'ma firm believer that he can be the 3rd best player on our defense if he stays over there for the whole season but we need him on O as well so that's gonna lower the amount of snaps he can play defensively. In a perfect world he plays so well on D, and his replacements on O shine to the point where defenese becomes his natural home and he sprinkles in some offense. I'm just of the opinion that corner is his natural home and where he can be of the most benefit to the team.

Those are just my opinons though, not really based on any stats. Just a few things I've noticed from watching the little bit that I have.

  • I agree that Mitchell is the wild card. I honestly don't know how many reps to expect out of him on the season over on the defensive side of the ball?

Will he be one of the top 2 cornerbacks on the defense by season's end? Top 3 when we go to the nickel (ahead of Smith, Swann, and Commings).

If he does crack the top 3 for the full season, I think he can produce some gamechanging results. Given the reps, I do think that his athleticism and ball skills will make him a leader on the defense much like Shawn Williams and Bacarri Rambo.

If he remains spot duty as he learns the complex schemes and responsibilities, I think Ray Drew has an opportunity to put up some big time stats. Put Washington at wDE and Drew at wOLB (keeping Jarvis on the strongside against spread offenses) will create a lot of opportunities equally for all 5 guys that crowd the line.
The key is what personnel Grantham thinks will give us the best matchups against our weekly opponents.

I agree with you about MM. The only thing I fear about MM is he can be so talented at WR or CB I just would hate to see a guy with that much talent not see the field as much as he needs to. He could be the best WR we have and CB. I think it was Hines Ward who we basically did not get to play one year because he played a back up role at so many positions.

  • The good news about the offense is that only a few plays can make a big difference (see TD runs by Smith, and TDs through the air and on the ground for Boykin).

I didn't see it from the spring film, but I think the Dawgs may try to go for more homerun plays on offense when they go to the air. Giving MM 5-10 snaps on offense a game would go a long way for stretching a defense and creating plays in space for King, Marshall, B Smith, and JSW.

  • I do wanna just pose this question as it relates to MM; does anybody think that having Branden Smith spend time on O somewhat slowed his development as a CB?? There are a few guys on our team that have that ability, but that is a tremendous demand from a mental standpoint. Does anybody think he coudl have gotten over loaded with info and confused himself, or could those lapses have come because he didn't spend enough time in one position?? Every player has mental lapses at one time or another, and I'm sure him being on the outside makes his mistakes that much more visible. But it's hard to ignore the fact that he was asked to spend time on both sides of the ball and he wasn't as effective as Boykin was who only had another year of experience on B Smith.

  • Boykin's 2011 perfprmance was light years better than his 2010 performance.
I'm banking on Smith taking a similar progression (maybe not to the same level, but very solid nonetheless).

They had to change schemes and coaches. Plus, this is SEC football. The highest level within the college ranks.

  • Agreed, I mean that guy's speed is off the charts. His instincts are so good when he can just play and not think, but I guess that's true for any player. But I do think B Smith will be a lot more sound now that he's had some more time in both systems, solidifying his roles and keys that much more.
