Good question I got today

  • I'm from Waycross. Fred Gibson was the best I saw play live, with DeAngelo Tyson a close second. The best I played against was a kid named Marcus Hunter from Fitzgerald. Solid D-I prospect at d-tackle, who couldn't keep his attitude straight long enough to stay on the field.

Who is the best player you have played against in high school or who is the best player you have seen play in person?

Me, played against some good ones. Best one was Ted Yarbrough of Early Co. RB that went to Aub and got shot in the leg. He was 6-2, 220 pounds in high school.

Best player I have seen play in person was Da'Rick Rogers or Takeo Spikes.( Not counting Nkemdiche or Reuben yet)

I watched Herschel Walker step on the face mask of a defensive back on the way to the end zone.

I watched Takeo spikes play manchild at Mary Persons

Those were the two best in person I ever saw

Art Schlichter's cellmates and Mo Clarett's rugby team believe Ohio State always does things honestly.....

  • I was a freshman and witnessed Ray Goff run roughshod over my team. My brother, who played linebacker, couldn't remember his name for three days. Buck Belue lit my team up one friday night.

  • I'm about to take all the of you who are from southwest GA back. If you are from or around the Albany Area which used to be a basketball hotbed and you got to see Jumaine Jones (Mitchell-Baker), Lavor Postell (Westover), and Mark Kimbrough (Terrell Co.) play, you truly saw some talented individuals. I also saw a healthy dose of Donnell Harvey (Randolph-Clay) and I saw William Avery play in the 3A playoffs when he was still at Westside-Augusta. On the football side, Crowell is the most talented guy I've seen in person on the highschool level.

  • Played against in football: Trey Blackmon and LaGrange when they won the title in '04. Trey may not have reached his full potential later on, but he was ridiculous in high school.

Played against in baseball: Buster Posey down in Lee County. The NL rookie of the year a few years ago at catcher, was a power-hitting shortstop who doubled as a pitcher with a fastball that touched 94 back then.

Donnell and Postell were beast but Dontonio Wingfield had no peers imo. Charles Grant was no punk in both football and basketball. Can't think of his first name but IIRC his last name was Pickens(???) from south ga and later at Auburn hell of a 3 sports athlete(fb, bb and baseball) he threw some heat on the mound.

  • Interesting question. I'm not entirely sure about played against. Maybe Andre Goodman, Travelle Wharton, or Durrell Robinson.

Best player I ever saw was Jamal Reynolds when Aiken played Berkeley high school in the playoffs. He was playing MLB. There were a handful of other D1 guys on the field as well, but it was one of those scenarios Donnan liked to talk about - anybody could pick him out of the crowd. He was a man amongst boys and continued that into college before being a bust in the pros.

It also reminds me of the recruit I've been most impressed with. Unfortunately it's a sad tale of him not making it, but Eric McClendon in the early 2000s was an unbelievable specimen. Just the kind of guy that doesn't come around every year, or even every five to ten years. I will never forget the attached picture of him as a high schooler. I'm not positive, but for some reason I think that might have even been his Junior season. Anyhow, he may be the most impressive prospect I've ever seen physically with his physique at 6'6" - 288.

Toc: Do you have ties to Harrison High School? If you do I'm sorry. lol I'm a Mceachern Indian! Anyways, Jeff Francoeur was really good at baseball and football in high school. I played against him in football as a soph. in high school. I played with Gerald McRath at McEachern he was really good, went on to play at southern miss and win all everything there and now plays for the Titans. I also went to high school for 3 years before he transfered with Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks.

I've got ties to several of the schools over there. I played ball with a lot of the McEachern, Harrison, and Marietta kids growing up. I've got a bunch of friends that went to North Cobb and later on I coached a few kids that went to Kennesaw Mountain. The list would get rather long but suffice to say that if they graduated a little before or after 01' I probably played with or against them at some point. Since your a McEachern guy I will tell you this in 99' I lucked out and got hurt before wrestling in the McEachern Duals. I was wrestling up a weight class for my team and would have had to have gone against Ray Miller had I been healthy that day. Suffice to say he had about 85lbs on me so I was more than happy to let him go out there and raise his hand by himself without me having ever stepped on the mat with him.

  • Jason Heyward would have to be the best player I ever played against, i was going to eagles landing which is a private school, and heyward was with henry county. I was a pitcher when we played against each other and there is a reason he was the number one prospect in 2010! the guy could kill the ball! I only struck him out once and every other time he'd either homer it, or get on base.....but running?!, you almost couldnt stop him from stealing bases! The best player I ever seen would have to be Matthew Stafford back in 2007 in sanford stadium against Auburn! The first game I ever went to and started REALLY loving the feel for the GEORGIA BULLDOG NATION! 45-20, with Stafford having the greatest game ever! We defeated Alabama that year in they're own house! So anytime I hear bama fans saying how they rule, I remember back to seen Stafford run down the field after winning and just laugh in they're face. UGA has and always will OWN BAMA!

Robert Toomer 1989 and 90 Worth Co Rams although my Syrupmakers beat them in the 90 state championship. He was big and fast but don't know what happened to him

I graduated from Worth Co. in 2009...wish I could have seen the (seemingly) one best player through there. I know he got a scholarship and played at LSU for at least one season, not too sure about after that though.

  • I saw George Rodgers in about '76 when Duluth played at Oconee County. He probably had about 300 yards at halftime...sat out the rest of the game. Duluth's entire team mysteriously smelled of Velveeta. Still haunts me...
