How should a UGA offer be viewed?

  • Much of these recruits rankings seem be to about the offers they have. I believe it to be a mix of big time offers, and obviously their talent level as opposed to other kids with similar offers. With the offers factoring more into a players ranking than his appearant talent. Just my opinion. I could be wrong. I personally have no problem with it. Many times a kids offer list will tell you more than the ranking. Most of the times the kids with the best offer list are ranked the highest anyways.

Yet one of my problems with that is how certain offers are viewed. It looks like right now everybody thinks Bama is the best offer a kid can get. If he gets a Bama offer his ranking is sure to go up. Some other offers that are viwed highly are USC, Florida, Texas.... I would probably put USC right behind Bama as far as the perception that a kid has recieved a big time offer.

I dont have a problem with the perception of a Bama, or USC offer. They are big time offers that a kid should be proud to get. My problem is that I dont believe a UGA offer is given near enough credit. Im not sure of the exact numbers now but UGA is right up there near the top as far as current players in the NFL. We had the second most players drafted in 2012 behind only Bama. UGA will probably have the most players selected in the 2013 Draft. UGA obviously does a great job at evaluating, and developing talent.

Obviously getting a UGA offer is a pretty big deal. Its definitely not as easy offer to get. If you geta UGA offer then you must me among the best in the nation. I also believe we are a little more selective than Bama, and USC as far as who we offer. Bama seems to offer all the top kids in the nation. No matter where they live or what their interest level in Bama is. With the sanctions I would imagine that USC was somewhat more selective in how many they offered for the 2013 class. I believe they cant take very many this year.

So how should a UGA offer be percieved by the recruiting community? How much should it effect a players rankings? Seeing the two lower ranked players we offered this past weekend in Johnson, and Mauger got me thinking of this. If either one of these kids got a Bama offer, or USC offer it would be viewed as much more big time IMO. I could be wrong but I think a Bama, or USC offer would cause these players ranking to rise more than a UGA offer will.

So how big of a deal do you think a UGA offer is? How do you think a UGA offer is currently percieved in the recruiting world? If you had to rank them?

  • I'm not a recruitnik. All i know is what i'm told.

I think Rusty put it well the other day.

An offer does not change a ranking. However, it may be a signal that a player needs/deserves another look.

If a player doesn't have any offers and UGA comes along, it's probably a signal that Rusty is going to do a double-take on him. If he doesn't have any major offers and UGA comes along, it's probably the same thing.

However, if a kid has offers from Florida and Auburn, and UGA offers then I doubt any immediate change can take place. No change in rankings will occur until fall starts and there's something new to evaluate.

There's just too many kids and too few opportunities to see guys live.
I don't even know how the film thing works... if Rusty gets to see the most competitive opponent gamefilm (in it's entirety) or if Rusty is seeing cutups (possibly done by the players themselves or their coaches that show only their good stuff... can you imagine how hard it is to rate players only on their cutups alone?)
