Is our long national nightmare over?

  • It's going to happen, but here is the line in the story that sticks with me, "Many of the details involved with this new postseason model remain unresolved."

There's a lot more haggling that has to happen, but I think we do know it will be a four-team playoff starting in 2014.

I think my biggest concern is - A: who is the "selection committee" going to consist of, and B: exactly how "transparent" is the selection process going to be?

Yep, these are my biggest ongoing concerns. I can live with a playoff, but I **really** dislike the use of a selection committee. Let everyone know in advance what they need to do to qualify, rather than letting hidden politics have a hand in it.

  • This one paragraph has me the most concerned -

"A key issue will revolve around who exactly will be on the proposed committee and how much weight they would give to winning a conference championship and strength of schedule. Revenue sharing must also be resolved in the coming months."

What happens when they realize that at least one or more SEC teams will be there every year and that many conferences will rarely get there. The "revenue sharing" is going to be a big issue. Also don't like the "winning a conference championship" item. That bit us already.

I also still don't understand why there are 11 conferences represented AND Notre Dame. One school gets the same voice as the conferences?

  • This won't resolve anything. You will still have a subjective decision on the 4 teams being chosen. Nothing different than the 10 teams that are picked in the current BCS format. So what happens when Boise State is undefeated and there are 3 other teams in that position - 1 from Big Ten, 1 from Big Twelve, 1 from ACC, and then you have a 1 loss SEC team that won its conference? Who is in and who is out?

This is not going to solve anything and will be no different than the current format other than they get more money for the Title game going to the highest bidder.

You can't do a playoff and have it be legit unless you are going to include more than 4 teams. That makes it difficult. I would argue in the last few years - 2 of the best teams in the country have always been in the SEC.

I don't see anything be solved by this but I guess it is a step to a more of a real playoff like they have in Div 1-AA - with the 16 team playoff.

Could not disagree with you more. I don't want a 16 team playoff. That would kill the regular season. Absolutely kill it.

I can't think of a single year in which letting the top four teams play it out wouldn't have satisfied just about everyone. If you can't work your way into the top four by the end of the year, then you probably don't have much of an argument to be in the playoff. I DO NOT WANT something like the basketball tourney. I just want a little more clarity at the top. I mean, are you telling me you think WE should have been in a playoff for the national championship last year? We didn't deserve it. And I don't want a system that gives a bunch of teams a chance to win it all that don't deserve it.

Totally agree with the ND comment...join a conference and have a voice just like any other conference member school. ND has no conference champioship game to win, they just have the support of NBC. This is where politics enters into the discussion and especially the makeup the selection committee. Interesting discussion will occur when the selection process for the committee is finally proposed.

  • Why are you guys worried about Notre Dame? Who cares if they have a voice? When is the last time they were even in a position to make a claim to be in the big game? The new playoff format isn't suddenly going to make Notre Dame be any less mediocre. They've always had a voice and it hasn't done anything for them in how many years?

  • Not worried about ND, but ND is a media team and there are media teams that grab all the attention.
But anyway nice discussion and we will just agree to disagree.
