Looking at the redshirt freshman for next year...

  • Is Sterling Bailey a guy they are trying to beef up as a DE or keep him at his current weight a play at OLB?
Also if we can get DeBell or Ward to put on enough weight I think we could have a future 3 year starter at OT.
Obviously, Bowman will need to be ready to play this year even if everyone stays healthy. I like how we are getting these bigger corners and bigger players in general. We are basically trying to do what Bama is doing on defense or what they do in the NFL which is big bodied physical defeses.
The other guy that caught my attention is Ramik Wilson. I think he moves full time to MLB and he should play some this year behind Ogletree.
If we can get a big class this year to really address some depth issues we should have our roster on track. And with what all we lose this coming year we better hit on the class like we did with the Dream Team.

Bailey has been recovering from surgeries and probably will be a LB not sure about DeBell but I read Ward put on 40 lbs.

  • Debell and Ward have also been hampered by injuries which have kept them from the training they need to add weight the right way.

    phdawg1

  • Didn't Richt say Ward has gained 40 lbs on Signing Day? About Bailey..I thought the word was he was adding weight and moving down to put his hand in the dirt with Drew. I may be mistaken but I thought that was the general consensus.

  • Bailey and Drew will both be 285+ pound DEs by 2013 imo. With both being around 6'4 265 as freshmen, they are much bigger than our OLBs were in their freshmen year.

Justin Houston was listed at 224 as a Fr, 240 as a RFr, 259 as a RSSoph.
Jarvis listed at 225 as a freshman, 234 as a soph, 241 as a RSSoph
    Darryl Gamble- FR-215, RFr-240, RSr-250
    Cornelius Washington- Fr-217, RFr-243, RSo-260, RJr-269
    Chase Vasser-208, 225, 227
    Faloughi-220, 250, 255

The DEs started out much closer to Drew/Bailey-
    Dobbs- 253...263...266...282...285
    Wood- 254...275...280...280...287
    Tripp- 244...263...288...294...293
    Lott- 270...295...303
    Garrison- 282...294
    Abry- 273...297...309

I know those weights aren't always accurate, but based on history I think the best bet is that Drew and Bailey add at least 25-30 pounds in the next 2 years. Most of those DEs were 6'2ish. They didn't have the frame to add weight that Drew does. The frame closest to Drew is Tripp, who gained 50 pounds from year 1 to year 4.

  • I agree with Seg for the most part. By 2013, the front seven may look like this. Depending on certain ILB recruits in 2013.

    DE - S. Bailey
    NT - J. Taylor
    DE - R. Drew

    OLB - JHC
    ILB - R. Wilson
    ILB - A. Herrera
    OLB - J. Jenkins

  • 1 heck of a post.

Though I have a feeling Granthem would like the minimum to be 295 at the DE position.

  • Really good data there. I was thinking the same on drew but that means he is still a year away from playing much. He is a 4-3 de right now.
From what i can tell the guys we used to recruit at dt are now de's. Abry is the perfect guy for that position.
Stripplings injury was bad. He is perfect for the 3-4 but was really set back. What a disaster that class has turned out to be. Thats why we had so little depth this year.

    SicEmDawgs

  • Grantham has 17 highly recruited guys on the roster still listed at linebacker.

I think he's gunning for 17 different shades of gray.
Some guys will play with their hand down against spread offenses. Some guys will hold the edge against run heavy teams. Some guys will take the wide split and inflict as much bodily harm on the qb as possible.

Everyone will have a specialty. And everyone will crosstrain.

Fwiw, when Ray Drew is finishing his career with UGA, I see him in Abry Jones' role. Moving all over the line, and finding ways to create chaos.

  • I would put Atkins at one of those DE spots. That kid is gonna be a stud.

We use a 4-3 type of DE a lot in our nickel package. Last year Washington played on the weakside with his hand down in a 7 technique. We had two bigs inside and Jarvis standing up on the strong side. Drew and Washington can both rotate at that spot in '12.

I have a feeling fellas that we are set for the future on our front 7! now its all about getting our corners and safeties to that level. If that happens we could have a top 5 defense for another 3-4 years! not to mention possibly adding Reuben foster to ILB. I like it! clap
