As many of you are aware, this past summer I received chemotherapy and radiation to treat bladder cancer. This was my second bout with this disease. In August I was given a clean bill of health. Just before Christmas I returned to my urologist for my three month cystoscopic follow-up exam. I received the results of that exam last week and found that my cancer had once again reoccurred. This is the third time, and since previous treatments have failed now it appears that my only option is complete bladder removal and reconstruction. I have an appointment at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville February 1st for initial consultation at which time my options and candidacy for surgery and treatment will be discussed.

I am not looking for pity, but I know there are some of my fellow Dawg fans who would appreciate knowing and being kept up to date as I once again embark on this perilous journey. So if you don't see me posting quite as often this is why. All I ask for at this time is your kind thoughts and prayers.

Thanks to all in advance, 1eyedJack.

    Praying for you brother

  • Prayers for you as my father, who is 84 now, went thru this 8 years ago and he's doing and testing fine. He had his procedure done at Vanderbilt and they were fantastic. Pops, after much consultation, opted for the bag(not sure the correct term) instead of reconstruction. Obviously at his age, he wasn't going to be taking his shirt off at the beach lol. Learning the nuances of using the bag took a month or so but he has it down pat and yes it more than an inconvenience but he does everything now that he used to do, golf, fishing, etc....
He had 2 friends who opted for reconstruction and unfortunately they are no longer with us. Not sure if there's a correlation of bag vs reconstruction but we're so glad he opted for that procedure.
I know Pops would be more than happy to talk to you if you ever have any questions or concerns. He received calls of assurance from a guy who helped ease his anxiety and Pops has met with others that have gone thru the same experience and helped them thru some trying times. He's more than happy to pay it forward.
Please know you will be OK and please get back to me if you'd like to chat with Pops, he'd love to offer his experience and assurances that you'll be OK! :)

Sounds like Pops had the ileal urinary diversion with stoma.
I have been researching this for a year, since my previous treatments last summer, and from my research it appears that a man of my age (53) has a higher mean survival time with less serious complications, better continence, and higher quality of life with the orthotopic bladder substitute. And I think I will feel better psychologically without the bag and peeing normally.
Hey, they can actually perform it robotically using da Vinci (less invasive, easier recovery). That would be real cool if I qualify for that.

Tell Pops to give 'em hell, and I'm shooting for his title (84 yrs.)

I'm sure you know that kind of attitude goes a long way in not letting this disease get you down Jack. My prayers are with you and your family at this time for another successful outcome. Just a visiting Gamecock wishing you nothing but success with your operation and a speedy recovery in the future. Been free now 7 years myself and the support you have here already amongst your fellow dawgs will be huge in your future. May God bless you and keep you in His hands starting as you start your February journey.
