Pre-Spring Primer: Defensive Line

Only one starter departs from a stable and proven defensive line that is again equipped to become a force for Georgia’s team in 2012.

  • I am pretty sure Sterling Bailey has been moved to DE, but might want to check

  • With the way Drew is built(a tweaner) I really hope he doesn't get lost in multiple position changing. I fear that he is too big to play OLB and not big enough to play DE. I know he is only a Sophomore, but the kid is certainly talented enough to get a lot of PT this year. I just hope he doesn't use up his eligibility without contributing as much as we all thought he could/would.

  • I think Ray Drew is going to be fine. CTG will find ways to get him on the field to be successful. I am sure his body can hold at least 285lb, which is plenty for a 3-4 DE. Plus if I remember correctly he was extremely strong coming in, which should help him hold up at the point of attack.

Noted, but remember that Bailey isn't practicing in the spring anyway because of the foot surgery.

One of the things to remember about this defense is Grantham likes to move guys around constantly IN ADDITION to base positions. It isn't usually a cut-and-dried choice between one or the other -- despite the fact that we journalists tend to have to simplify it to write it that way in pre-spring primers.

  • i trust our defensive staff to find ways to get drew on the field and to take advantage of his strengths. the 3-4 is a very flexible defense, and with so much experience coming back i think we'll really be able to show some crazy looks and move guys into positions where they can be successful.

Sonny brought up a point a while back that our base was actually a Nickel (4-2) about 60% of the time. If that is the case in 2nd/3rd and long, Drew can easily play DE to increase our pass rush. He will be a little undersized at DE in our 3-4 vs. the run, but even that should change after this year. I think he is going to have an opportunity to spell Abry/Garrison in some situations where we line up in a Nickel front and really command a lot of attention from the offense. That is simply gonna create opportunities for Jarvis, Tree, and whoever that inside Nickleback is going to be. Our defensive fronts will be multiple and extremely hard to move the ball against if we can consistently stop teams on first down to little or no gain. I think he plays at 275-280 this year and is easily 290 by next year. He is going to be a FORCE for the next two to three years!

I wouldn't want to be the one tasked with blocking him.

  • A better running game will rest those big guys up front..Sterling Bailey is my Breakout player..

  • D line will be nasty this year ray drew is a player and ctg gets players on the field if ray isn't ready in ctg mind im cool with that

  • I know this is a pre-spring primer, but looking ahead I think we could use some help from the incoming freshmen next year. As Gentry noted, the DL tended to wear down late in games (LSU, Mich. St.) and some fresh legs in the second half could make a big difference.

I'll be most interested this spring in the development of Lott and Thornton to add depth, and hope Bailey can be healthy enough to contribute in a big way in the fall.

  • Does anyone know if D Lott will be ready to go. Kid was a beast last spring. If we can find 2 CB that can really cover. I don't see any reason why this D can't be the best in the nation

  • The biggest barrier to Ray getting snaps in 2012 is CW. they are both true 4 3 DEs which means they are splitting those 60% of snaps when we have a 4 man line because we are not taking Jarvis out much. CW doesn't post big numbers but I was very glad to see him come back as he really adds a physicality to our speed rush

we need some depth to be built across the board especially at olb and de for this year. that was an issue and they were worn down late in the games and it showed. that is a need this offseason, but i don't have a big concern that we won't be able to do that at DE. now at olb it will be interesting to see our rotation.

Johnny Dwight commits to Bama on 6/4/13 ranked the 44th DT in the nation by 247sports and 87 rating a 3 star. Now see the Bama bump.
