Ryne Rankin

  • Ryne is an intriguing recruit - despite setting the record as a Junior for tackles last year in talent rich FL, it is extremely surprising that he did not get any offers from the big 3 in the State. He also has a lot of offers from many "B" listers, though he does have an offer from Linebacker U, Penn St.

I've done some digging but cannot come up with any solid rationale why he seems to be relatively low rated. Perhaps he doesn't have ideal/optimal measurables, but at 6' 1", 230lbs and 4.6 forty, his measurables are certainly in the wheelhouse, so to speak.

Furthermore, Rivals has him rated as a 3 star and scout NR. 247 has him rated as a 90 pointer/4 star. I know in the "What he brings to the table" article, this was mentioned as a weakness:

    Needs to improve on
Rankin will need to get stronger and play with a little lower pad level against SEC-level linemen. Right now he is primarily rushing the passer, so he will have to learn to read multiple keys facing spread offenses as an SEC LB.

-- I just can't see this being the main reason dragging down his ranking, particularly since he's got a great nose for the ball, is really smart and is a tackling machine. Is there more to the story on Ryne?

  • Because he is white.. Just sayin. White boys.generally dont excel at this posistion in college. Let Ryne be the exception.

  • He reminds me a lot of James Laurinaitis, former Ohio state linebacker. They play the same with great intensity and were both rated 3 stars with limited major BCS offers. I can only wish that Rankin turns out the way Laurinaitis did for OSU. The guy was a stud....

  • Little exposure up to this point.... Hence the rankings.

He's got nearly 20 offers, it can't be because of little exposure....

  • Cos, I have to disagree with you completely. First of all race has ZERO to do with it and is a cop out for an excuse. We were just hard after Dillon Lee last class who everybody else was after as well and just so happens he's white. No way is that the reason. We didn't offer a lot of black kids that were/are ultra talented for various reasons at various positions but race wasn't one if them I'm sure.

A recruit can send tapes to coaches that don't wind up in the recruiting sites hands. This result in offers without a ton of exposure. This is also why schools do their own recruiting and not just follow the websites.

Camps are a major part of exposure too for recruiting sites. The more they get to see you, the more confident in giving a high rating. Every 5 star out there has considerable evaluations on him.

  • He played in a high classification. He led the state in tackles. He's a coaches kid. I watched his film. He can play.

  • Brian Cushing, (even without the roids), Keith Brooking, Zach Thomas, Clay Matthews, Mike Vrabel, this had to be a joke we all missed right? lol

    meloguy4

  • Yes, there's some great white linebackers out there...

But its still like 5-1 black guys to white guys at the position in the NFL.

Heck, look at UGA's rosters. 1 white lb to 13-14 black guys.

  • I think most talent people on the recruiting sites think, with him being a coach's son, he has maxed on his potential moreso than others. If you haven't noticed, athleticism displayed at camps and other simulated football scenarios always seem to be more highly ranked than actual football stats by pretty much all recruiting sites. Not that they are wrong, I just think there is a little bit of a bias in "discovering" prospects involved there. However, they certainly aren't completely wrong- I think most of Buford High and Texas state guys have pretty much maxed their potential by having a really good high school programs on their side.

this is a really good post. i'll say i was quite impressed by rankin's film, but highlight film can be deceiving because it hides weaknesses-- indeed, it's supposed to do that. we have to remember that rusty and these other guys have watched these kids in camps and other competitive situations. of course, those simulated situations can be misleading as well, but rusty in particular seems to have a really sharp eye (except, of course, where johnny o'neal is concerned biggrin).

having said all that, rankin will be reevaluated as his senior year unfolds and his stock can only go up if he keeps hitting and tackling like he does on film.
