Second year in the 3-4 defense, any changes?

  • I know year two in the 3-4 should produce fewer mistakes and faster reads by the guys on defense. Wanted to find out what everyone else expects to see more of in year two. I for one hope to see more guys involved in getting to the QB. Last year JH was a beast but in good 3-4 defenses, more guys talley more sacks. One premise of the 3-4 is to confuse the o-line on who to block with the ability to blitz from multiple positions. With the ability to overload one side or the other. With Jenkins and Geathers at NT eating up blockers, I would like to see more blitzes right over center with athletes like Alec Ogletree at ILB. AC brings big time speed to that position. With the guys we have up front, we should be able to get more guys coming free on the blitz. Everything I've read on JJ is really positive and I expect a big season from him as long as he is eligible. September 3rd can't get here fast enough for this dawg fan!

  • jarvis is better than houston. we need improved safety play.

  • I think we'll be much better against the run with Jenkins plugging the middle. Plus, I believe we'll be much more multiple in the secondary with confusing other QBs, basically because our guys are experienced enough in the system to run the more complex material.

I'm genuinely excited about year 2 under CTG. We should be much, much better and I think we will be.

I agree with you on needing better safety play. I'm hoping Corey Moore can help out there, he is on of the few recruits that I was able to watch in person and he is a legit playmaker IMO. Any news on how he has been doing since arriving in Athens? I hope your spot on about JJ being better than JH, if he is the defense should be really good. Thanks

I agree 100%. CTG probably left half the play book at home in year one.

All I've seen is that he looks thicker in person. Sure hope he and the other guys are doing 7-on-7 with Murray.

Jones and Houston don't play the same position. Washington takes over at the weakside linebacker spot. But I agree that Jarvis will probably be a much better all around OLB than Justin.

Rambo improved a lot over the course of last season. He saw quite a bit of action as a freshman and sophomore.
Assuming he can stay healthy, I expect him to contribute quite a bit as an upper-classman.

I expect Rambo to have a great year at safety, the other safety position is what worries me. I do think Jakar Hamilton will be a lot better than last year, just not sure he will improve enough to be counted on. He has the ability to play at a high level, most of his problems last year were mental. Hopefully in year 2 of CTG defense he will clean that up. Thank you for your imput on the subject!

From what I've heard about Corey, he will work his tail off. I believe he sees playing time this year. Hopefully the upperclassman will play great and we won't have to count on to many true freshman to play right away.

    Crit,

What, if anything, are you hearing on the eligibility of Jarvis? In your opinion, will he be on the field against Boise?

    HoJo

  • Jarvis has a long standing pre existing relationship with the guy who bought the plane tickets. The guy has bought numerous things for other athletes in Columbus. Its all about how our compliance department plays it to me.

    critdawg

  • I would expect a lot more of the actual 3-4 set in year 2. I think we ran more 4-3 last year than 3-4. Maybe I'm just buying the hype hook, line and sinker, but I think our defense is primed for a stellar season - the kind that can make up for an average offense.

If there is ever a definition of "pre existing relationship" then this has got to fit that mold. Couldn't imagine (knock on wood) that UGA would let the NCAA screw us again, especially given the punishment issued out to Ohio State and crew.

  • We were in a lot of nickel last season with 4 down linemen.

The size improvement up front should help quite a bit in this formation.

Ironically, the one game all season I expected 4 down linemen was against gt. And grantham was adament trying to make the 3-4 work in that game.

  • On a side note, I loved seeing hamilton line up at cb against run heavy teams. Getting off blocks and upfield to push the play back inside was a specialty of his. Against teams like miss st, auburn, gt, and maybe even vandy, I think he could contribute immensely on the perimeter against the run.

  • I hope we will see a lot more of the masked blitzes the what was used last year, with more shifts and delayed blitz utilized. There is nothing better then seeing a LB or CB Blitz coming from the blindside and being successful.
