Serious Offensive Question

  • I read something yesterday (I don't remember where) and someone brought up a point about Murray's "inefficiency" when he threw downfield.

I haven't verified the numbers, but the concept that a QB rating might go down the further downfield the pass attempt is not unheard of.

With all of our talent on offense, why do we think this was so in 2011?
Do our receivers struggle to get off of jams?
Is the QB and receiver not reading the defense the same way?
    Is the timing off?
Is the quality of receiver not what I think it is (ie. AJ Green spoiled us)?
Are the majority of incompletions downfield a reflection of the blocking?
Are they a reflection of fundamentals by Murray?

Personally, I didn't think the downfield action was too bad last season. And I have been on record thinking that Murray may do some "Mad Bomber" action in 2012 ala Stafford (3rd year starter, most of the targets returning).
Was this other source that spouted low efficiency numbers wrong?

What did you see? Should we expect the same in 2012 downfield?
Do we expect a very conservative passing attack in 2012?

  • If you go back to the game last year against Boise State and then all season - our receivers were covered for the most part - the exception was Mitchell. Also - we had issues with the OL and the blocking was a problem so you had the TE in to help block. We had a not so great running game and as a result - he did not get lots of time to pass. Look for that to change with Tibbs, Wesley, King, Brown, and Bennett. If we can block on the OL, we should have a pretty good run game with our backs. That will open up our receivers because teams will have to shift guys down to cover the run first. Then you go to play action pass, and look for receivers to have some separation. Throw Marshall in the slot and that should bring guys up as well.

If we can block and run then our pass game should actually be pretty prolific given the skill players we have. It should only get better if Mitchell plays any WR.

  • Personally, I think it's been an extension of our lack of a strong running game in the past couple of years. Stafford was able to complete those long passes because he had Knowshon Moreno standing behind him; teams had to move six or seven defenders into the box to stop the run. I rewatched the Auburn game from this past season, and Auburn was (for some reason) putting six in the box on defense to stop the run. As a result, Murray torched them downfield.

So, to sum it up, Crowell, Marshall, Gurley, and the rest of the RB corp can get it going this season, I think we'll see a lot more long completions out of Aaron.

I'm not so sure how well Stafford completed those downfield throws.
I remember the 2008 Florida where we kept throwing bombs and putting ourselves in 3rd and long because of just missing the targets.

They are not easy to hit. I personally think it put our offense in a bind with all of those wasted downs.

Boise whipped us up front. They were able to get quick pressure on Murray with 4 and 5 man pass rushes. I do know in that game... the OL was a huge liability for any passing game.

What's weird meansonny is I always felt that Stafford, while having a strong arm, wasn't very accurate on the downfield throws and that Murray, with a lesser arm, was able to make those throws. Not all of them were in stride and I do remember several times Durham had to slow or stop to catch a ball but the WRs still caught them.

Would be interesting to see the breakdown of those deep throws.
