Signee Update: Marshall Morgan

While some signees have time to settle into college, Georgia needs kicker Marshall Morgan to be ready immediately. And he's working to make a freshman starting role a reality.

  • UGA is fortunate in all likelihood to have three good kicking specialist options in Erickson, Lindley, and Marshall Morgan. And from what I've read extensively about Morgan, he's got the potential to be a great one.

As I've posted before, I know he's untested in college, but to be considered the best protégé to have studied under one of the most renowned kicking instructors in the nation, Tim Conrad of BIGfoot Kicking Academy in FLorida, I like his chances to be the next great kicker for the University of Georgia. I certainly like his self-assurance, and just hope he can carry his accuracy over to the field!

Georgia's kicking game seems to rest on talented feet!

  • After seeing what we have in the stable, and coming into the fold, I am not worried about field goals at all.

What we truly should hope for is the Barber comes in and starts booting balls farther and better than anyone did in the G Day game. Most of those punts were really bad. Hopefully we won't have to punt much this season, but when we do, we need a good boot back there.

UGA should have its punting duties fully covered. Colin Barber is supposed to be able to do just that, kick it high with a long hang time. Interestingly, so can Marshall Morgan if we have to call on him. He's supposedly a reliable consistant mid-40's punter with a 4-5 second hang time.

Again, from what I've read, unless something 'mentally' strange happens, both our kicking and punting duty specialists should serve UGA well.

If you care to continue reading, here's an excerpt of one of Conrad's articles on Morgan:

Coach Conrad has sent over 50 specialists to Division 1 schools over the last 11 years, and his company has coached a high school All-American kicker or punter for five consecutive years. His camp, BIGfoot, has become the premier company in training specialists in the state of Florida. Conrad has seen more than his fair share of top kicking talent over the years, but he feels the Bulldogs have the best he has ever coached.

"I have had 14 straight Division 1 kickers, and Morgan will be the 15th I put out and signed Division 1. I had Wes Byrum, who kicked at Auburn this past year; I had Brett Swenson at Michigan State, who holds every record in the book; and I had the number one kicker in the country last year in Michael Palardy. This kid surpasses all of those guys. He is by far the best guy I have ever worked with. I have worked with the best of the best, and he is the best kicker I have ever coached. The sky is the limit with Marshall. Georgia is getting someone I really believe will be one of the top kickers in college football as a freshman. That is important because Georgia is expecting him to come right in and start," said Conrad.

Coach Conrad feels Georgia fans should be very excited about adding Morgan to the 2012 class. He also gave his take on how Morgan would handle being the last line of defense in the return game.

"The best thing I can say about Marshall is that Georgia is getting a high quality person. He was the team MVP, and his character and work ethic are above anybody I have ever worked with. If he is standing between a returner and the endzone, I think Marshall hits him head on, to be honest with you. Because if it is a foot race, he is not going to keep up with SEC level athletes. But he is smart enough to be able to plug that hole quickly, and hit the guy right between the numbers," said Conrad.

    Edited ADD - Punting Specialist:

""He was an All-State punter as a freshman. Marshall is going to be the first kicker in Florida high school history to be four time All-State. I do not it has ever been done, and I do not think it has been done at two different positions. He will be All-State at both punter and kicker. Georgia told him going in they would give him a chance to do both. They will probably end up looking for a punter since they lose Butler too," Conrad explained. "They will probably recruit a punter who can kick, because they already have a kicker who can punt in Marshall."

Just MHO, but I think MM will serve UGA well! I'm excited to see what he can do on-field in the clutch!

  • "I like the pressure. I think it will just push me even farther."

This is the quote that caught my attention. I love to hear that from a kicker. The great ones thrive on pressure!
