South Carolina picked to have the best D

  • USCe won the ESPN poll for best defense next year. UGA not getting much love despite the fact that we return 9 defensive starters and 12 of 14 top tacklers. We are also not replacing the D coordinator. Aschoff at least picked LSU, which I can understand.

A lot of votes were cast and it came down to the wire, but the fans have spoken and South Carolina has won the poll battle of the defenses. With near

  • SC will be good. Their DL will be strong, no doubt. Personally, I like flying under the radar. We all know what we have returning... Just need for our kids to make smart choices over the summer to make sure we have everyone come fall.

    RopeDAWG82

  • Probably better, as we seem to perform best when we we have something to prove.

  • Drawing on my fine command of the English language, I'm gonna say nothing. Having said that, in defense of So. Carolina, there is no defense of So. Carolina.

Don't they have a new defensive coordinator? That'll probably have a negative effect early. And SC typically fades late in the season.

Clowney will be their best defender and will have tackles and running backs diving at his knees all season. He might not make it to the sixth game. explode

  • This really makes me think this guy is an idiot. Yeah I know south Carolina has some good players but I dont think you can compare thier defense to ours or alabamas or lsu. They dont have the talent that we have and we have everybody coming back on defense while they lost Ingram and Gilmore and a few others. I just dont see them being that good.

  • I wouldn't lose sleep over a preseason fan poll. Especially one hosted by the 4 letter network.

I think every defense in the sec returns some questionmarks. Luckily for the dawgs, I do not believe the front 7 should be one of them. And it is in the trenches where most games are won and lost in the SEC.

FYI, our Lorenzo Ward has been an understudy of Ellis Johnson his entire tenure at South Carolina. Ward runs the exact same defense, the 4-2-5. I hate to break it to you but there is no learning curve on this defense. The only difference is that Ward wants to be more aggressive and plans on implementing more blitz packages. He coached the Gamecocks in the Capital One Bowl and the D didn't miss a beat, holding Nebraska to their lowest yardage total of the season.

I think you will be surprised at the amount of talented depth that South Carolina has been stock piling over the past few seasons. Clowney didn't play but 30 snaps a game and will be getting 50 - 60 this year. DT Kelcy Quarles got limited playing time last year as well, and not because he didn't deserve it, he is a complete stud. Akeem Auguste, the top Safety, medical red-shirted last year. The major question mark on defense is the LB corp. I definitely give UGa the edge against USC here, Georgia has one of the best, if not the best LBs in the country.

  • we've also got one of the best secondaries in the nation. all 4 senior starters will go in the draft next year.

  • IMO, when you start comparing UGA, Bama, LSU and USCe's D's, you really have to split hairs. All 4 are going to end up in the top 10 nationally at season's end. Position weaknesses on all four of these squads would probably be considered strengths on most other teams in the country. We all just have a higher bar to compare to, iyam.

  • I wouldnt lose to much sleep over what a poll says, everybody knows that it does not matter what a poll says, it matters what a team can do and how much experience they have. With USCjr losing so much talent to the draft, I honestly do not see them being the dominate force in the east. Watching they're spring game DB's made me see just how bad they will be thrown on all year to, did not impress me one bit. Gilmore, Antonio, Jeffrey, and Ingram were they're biggest play makers and I do not care about what any body says, they do not have the talent to reload at those positions. I give credit to Clowney, but that's the only play maker I see returning to that defence.

  • Been a while, but as usual on these kinds of threads, we're not going to let it turn into back-and-forth smack talk between sides.

To our Big Spur visitors, the post above from Cocked&Locked is a good example of an informative post that adds something to the conversation and keeps the thread on topic. But posts from visitors to our board that basically say nothing more than "You guys suck" or "We're gonna win" or things like that are not welcome here and will be deleted.

Righteous Brothers - Lost That Loving Feel...

http://www.radiointernetsite.com The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Loving Feeling Lyrics: You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips. And there's no tenderness like before in your fingertips. You're trying hard not to show it, (baby). But baby, baby I know it... You've lost that lovin' feelin', Whoa, that lovin' feelin', You've lost that lovin' feelin', Now it's gone...gone...gone...wooooooh. Now there's no welcome look in your eyes when I reach for you. And girl you're starting to criticize little things I do. It makes me just feel like crying, (baby). 'Cause baby, something beautiful's dyin'. You lost that lovin' feelin', Whoa, that lovin' feelin', You've lost that lovin' feelin', Now it's gone...gone...gone...woooooah Baby, baby, I'd get down on my knees for you. If you would only love me like you used to do, yeah. We had a love...a love...a love you don't find everyday. So don't...don't...don't...don't let it slip away. Baby (baby), baby (baby), I beg of you please (please), please (please) I need your love (I need your love), I need your love (I need your love), So bring it on back (So bring it on back), Bring it on back (so bring it on back). Bring back that lovin' feelin', Whoa, that lovin' feelin' Bring back that lovin' feelin', 'Cause it's gone...gone...gone, and I can't go on, woh-oh-oh-oh Bring back that lovin' feelin', Whoa, that lovin' feelin' Bring back that lovin' feelin', 'Cause it's gone...gone...gone... And I can't go on.. wooooah

this is a good post, and i appreciate your points here. no doubt the cocks will have a very strong defense. the reason we expect a dropoff from johnson to ward is not just because we hope to see one (although we do), but because we saw the exact same thing happen in our own program when van gorder handed the reigns to sweet willie. willie ran the same defense, and when he took over there was a lot of talk about forcing more turnovers, being more aggressive and opportunistic, etc... of course, you know what happened as well as we do. i guess i just mean to say: we're not just hating (though yeah, we're doing some of that too). we've been there before.

of course, every situation is different and just because sweet willie failed doesn't mean ward will. but if i were a cock fan i'd definitely be worried about losing a defensive mind like ellis johnson, as he's been one of the best in the country for years.

btw, who's lining up next to quarles on the inside? the one kid robertson graduated if i recall. looking forward to a good one come october.

It happens to all great coaches. Turnover at the coordinator positions making their jobs uncomfortable.

Phil Fulmer. Tommy Tubberville. Urban Meyer ran out of town because lost the defense which is the reason why he won 2 NCs and he lost his playcaller of 10 years.
LSU was able to catch things up with only a 1 year gaffe (2008) after Bo Pelini left and before they brought in Chavis. Do we expect anything great out of Chizik without Malzahn? I don't.

Do I wish that on Steve Spurrier? Yeah. I do. The reality is that it's hard to replicate the success. I can't do my bosses job just like him. Equally, he couldn't do my job just like me. We're different people. And despite similar philosophies and goals, we don't motivate and teach the exact same way. We have our own uniqueness about us. It is no different in football.
