South Carolina picked to have the best D

  • ca dawg said...

btw, who's lining up next to quarles on the inside? the one kid robertson graduated if i recall. looking forward to a good one come october.

Thanks, Gentry. I'm always looking for bits of information on our opponents during the offseason to get me through the summer and into fall camp. Wasn't crossing enemy lines to pick a fight. I promise to be on good behavior.

Ca Dawg, as things stand now it will likely be Byron Jerideau (Senior 6'1" 316). He was used primarily on run situations last year. Has a big heart but the coaches haven't been able to get him to "be mean" consistently. The coaching staff want and are expecting him to step-up this season. He is one of the strongest players on the team, broke the school record in squat max this year at 645 lbs. The jury is still out on whether he can be an every-down DT like Travian Robertson was for us last year. Got a lot of young talent that will see some playing time this season at DT. JT Surratt and Deon Green will be players to watch this year at DT. Got solid depth behind Devin Taylor and Clowney too in Chaz Sutton and Aldrick Fordham.

    Can't wait.

  • I think this was a fan vote deal anyway?

I think we'll be solid. It will be...again....Bama, LSU, USC, UGA as the clear top 4 defenses and all prolly top 10-15 in the nation.

As far as who is better between us and UGA...I don't really care...more interested in who WINS the EAST!

anyway screw you dawgs and all that. ;-)

    I LOVE UGA

  • I agree there will be no learning curve but Ellis was a great evaluator of talent and that is hard to replace. Its actually very similar to what we went through with losing Van Gorder. He was a great evaluator and we thought we wouldnt miss a beat after he left with Martinez taking over. 5 years later our D was completely destroyed.

As far as comparing the defenses you have to go with UGA but Socar will be solid. They eat up spread offenses with their speed but they typically struggle with pro style offenses that have a legit QB. They only faced 2 of those last year and gave u 40 + each time.

Devin Taylor, Clowney, and Quarels are very good players. The corners will be very stout too. But they lost 2 first rounders plus experience with guys like Robertson and Allen. Even with all those guys we hung 42 on them and Crowell despite only 16 carries in his first ever SEC game ripped them up.

Our defense is alot like theirs in that we are very limited on depth and that is the biggest issue. Just like SoCar we cant afford any injuries. We have a little more deph than they do but neither team has much. SoCar for all their talk of overcoming injuries last year really stayed very healthy on defense and they lost Lattimore but Garcia does not count as an injury sorry. That was their own fault depending on that idiot.

  • I wasn't trying to start a trash talking war between UGA and USC. USCe actually finished 4th last year, better than UGA. The gulf between the 2 squads is razor thin. They are both going to finish top 10. I do think that USC lost alot, and the difference between Ward and Johnson is an unknown. I would not be surprised with a slip for them this year, at least at the beginning of the season.

Agreed, but the reason for my post wasn't to argue whose defense is/was/will be better, it was to provide you guys some factual insight on the status of our program.

Georgia's defense has had no answer to Lattimore the past two times they've played. Plus we had a drunk for a QB who couldn't throw the ball accurately with any consistency. UGa's D has yet to face Connor Shaw. Realistically, UGa has yet to face USC when it had it's best offense on the field.

I also agree we had problems with your offense last season, but this season is this season. Remember though, our offense isn't what beat UGa last year, it was our defense and special teams. As many points as our defense gave up, it got back with game changing plays. UGa had a tremendous OL last season. What is your team's OL looking like this year? Our OL is certainly better. Last year's game between the Cocks and the Dawgs was one of the best, most exciting football games I've ever seen between us rivals (Please don't go full-Dabo on me with "This isn't a rivalry.."). I hope you agree; regardless it always sucks being on the losing end of games like that, especially at home. We had a lot of problems with Tyler Wilson and company too, we somehow are unable to get up for games against Arkansas.

Crowell is a good back, no doubt about that. IMO he has some durability issues. Not a flame, but an observation. I followed your team very closely last year because I was hoping y'all would eventually slip, but unfortunately for my Gamecocks, Georgia persevered.

  • It is certainly a rivalry the last few years. If you go around talking about how great our Oline was last year, you might lose credibility points. Hopefully, they will be more mobile and effective this year. That games is highest on my radar for next year.

  • That drunk u had for qb is one of the best u ever had. He make a couple of huge throws in that game. Shaw is a better guy no doubt and can hurt u running for sure but he isnt Tebow running and has a less than average arm. I expect his passing to improve because other than some hail marys to Jeffrey he was terrible last year.
I am not sure what you mean when you say we havent faced your offense full strength yet because we play u almost every year minus a few stars including AJ Green 2 yrs ago and no Cock fans wanted to hear that.
Lattimore killed us both years and if it is close i expect him to be a huge problem again. Keep in mind we didnt have a very important guy in that game Alec Ogletree and even without him we did a good job on ML until the 4th. He is a great one but can be stopped. I will never know how the worst dc ever owned him but Ted Roof had him figured out.
It will be interesting to see what is different with the game later. Spurrier has gone out of his way to get a couple of extra daya each year and focus all aummer on UGA. That cant happen this year. We always get Socar healthy and undefeated. That may not be the case this year. We will see.

  • Looking at who's coming back and who is replacing those lost, I would have to pick UGA for the top D. I'd follow that up with LSU, and then probably USCe over UA.

To me, Malcolm Mitchell's switch to CB has a good chance of being a HUGE move. He was ridiculous as a true freshmen at WR, and besides one play in the SECCG, he is electric dynamite when he's on the field like Brandon Boykin and AJ Green.

Another guy I expect to see early and often is Jordan Jenkins. He has the physical tools and technique to pull the cogs out of any offense. I think he is going to be a special guy.

Although, the biggest piece of the puzzle hasn't been mentioned yet. Coach Todd Damn Grantham. The defense is now his defense, the players have been cultivated into his players.
