oh gentry, how've i missed the practice report...
prediction: jj green has better numbers than alvin kamara in 2013.
“But Todd, he’s like Keith, J.J. and Brendan but built into one. And that’s just not normal.” - Arthur Lynch
I dnt see how we aren't as big or bigger as a collective group on the DL. Mayes, Taylor, Atkins, Smith, Thornton, and Johnson are all 300+ lbs, and Bailey and Drew are 285+ lbs. By the time the season rolls around, every DL could be 300+ lbs....
G, is Vasser on schedule with his shoulder recovery? Will he be ready for spring practice?
both John and Kwame were north of 340....
Gentry, thanks for the report. I like the depth of the OL at this time. I really like the news about Rumph. Also hope that Herrera sees a lot of reps this year.
Size is so overrated on the DL. Bama had one of the best defenses in the modern era in 2011 with 6'0 310 pound Josh Chapman at NG and 6'2 285 pound Damion Square at DE. LSU has had great defenses with smaller, quicker DL, though they do run a 4-3. Meanwhile, last year's defense was the 2nd worst in the Richt era based on national yard per game ranking, with two 350+ pounders.
I look forward to a line of Smith, Drew, and Thornton/Taylor. They'll play with leverage and be much quicker. We literally can't get much worse against the run, so I'm excited to get back to a more conventional sized defense.
Our OL was much better after replacing 3 experienced starters (all NFL draft picks) weighing 342, 348, and 316 with guys weighing 318, 309, and 290. There is no upside in being the biggest team in college or pro football. Folks fell for needing a Terrance Cody for the 3-4 work, but apparently those people haven't noticed Bama has improved since they replaced Cody with 305-320 pounders.
